New Super8 films DVD from makers of 'A Shift in Perception'

Post by dagman »

Many of you would be familiar with 'A Shift in Perception'... a 16 minute experimental documentary exploring the experiences and thoughts of three blind/vision impaired women. After winning awards in Australia, the UK, USA, Canada, Hungary, France and Mexico and appearing at over 60 film festivals, directors Dan Monceaux and Emma Sterling have turned their hand to more experimental film work, under the project name of 'Supermarket'.

Fusing original electronic music with visual rhythm studies and conceptual moving image artworks, their first Supermarket DVD 'We Never Close' features four films which vary in approach from documentary to abstract and animated. Two of these four films were shot on Super8 film (Abstractions No.3 and Urban Spice) and show unique production approaches including pulling focus during telecine, aggressive hand-developing of tri-x, and Dan and Emma's signature photographic approaches including time lapse and pixillation. One of the other films is a digitally rendered high-contrast geometric animation inspired by the op-art movement of the 1960's.

For those interested in the work of Len Lye, these works drag his celluloid rhythm studies of the '60s into the electronic age, with captivating results.

...."Shift in Perception" is a really excellent documentary short. I have watched my copy numerous times. I'm looking forward to seeing this next work. I'm not familiar with Len Lye, however I did find this article about him:

Just letting you all know that Em and I are touring this work (and our full performance) across Canada and the USA in April & May... if anyone here has any suggestions re: venues/organisation we should contact re: screening, that would be great.

At this stage it looks like: Dawson City, Whitehorse, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto (Canada) then south to NY state. There will also be opportunities to screen anywhere between Florida and California, as I make my way back from a project in the Caribbean (late May).

... your thoughts?
