B&H Filmosound 488 projector slow motion and sound

Hello,

I've a Bell & Howell super 8mm Filmosound 488 with a problem, when you run the movie (18 fps) the projection it is a little bit in slow motion also the sound is slow.

I would like to know if there is a DIY solution for this.

Where did the sound film come from that you are projecting?

Most (almost all) commercial prints are 24 FPS.

If it's film somebody shot with a sound camera, maybe 18FPS, maybe 24.

PS: Is that Monterrey, as in Nuevo Leon?

All the films tested were commercial prints: Star Wars, Close Encounters of the third kind & Battlestar Galactica, all the films are in 18 fps with exception of Galactica this one is in 24 fps.

If I switch the selector to 24 fps the projection is even slower.

All the above films run well in another projector a Kodak Ektasound 235.

A few years back I had a job where I commuted between McAllen and Reynosa a couple of times a year

-many good times, I hope to go back again some day. It's easy to want to go right now when they keep mentioning snow in the forecast.

Is this a new problem or have you just brought the projector back to active duty? Sometimes when machines like this sit a long time oxides build up on switches and plugs and a good cleaning will set things right.

Maybe try to trace the wiring from the motor to some sort of printed circuit board. This would be a speed control board, and there should be two potentiometers on it for speed adjustment (one for 18, one for 24). If you find these adjusting them may break the oxides on their wipers and restore normal speed.

Hopefully it's not some component failure.

-although I know some really sharp electronics people down the road from you!

Is this one of the USA made Filmosounds and not the one made by Eumig or Chinon? Probably the drive belt has stretched and is loose. Also the lubricant in some of the shafts may be gummy.

This model has no belt. The second photo you post shows the drive discs, which are the heart of the drive system. The discs are lined with rubber for contact to the drive wheel on the motor. Usually the rubber deteriorates with age and the drive slows down. You can purchase a replacement drive disc assembly, but they aren't cheap (see here - scroll down to EUMIG DRIVE PULLEY FOR MARK-S 8MM MODEL PROJECTORS).

AVOID spraying silicone spray into the projector, especially into the drive discs. This will make the problem worse and cause the drive discs to slip totally. You could try cleaning the the disc surfaces with alcohol to help restore grip, but results will depend on how bad the rubber has deteriorated. They also make a rubber restore liquid, but again, it is only a temporary solution.
