Finishing to Film

Hello.

I know the process for creating a movie on DVD. Film, process, transfer, edit, burn. If I wanted to finish on film (16mm), what considerations are required? Particularly with respect to transfer, because I would still like to edit digitally. I know there are several methods for film to be transferred to tape. As neg cutters need the edit decision list, I assume the keycode numbers must be preserved and contained on the capturing media. Does this require a "frame-by-frame scan?" Is the entire film width scanned?

Do costs rise when transferring for Final Cut Pro (I'll be renting time on FCP) - or other pro applications that allow for a "celluloid" finish?

If you're going to edit in digital you could also transfer that back to film - assuming you've got it at a high resolution etc

no, you don't need to preserve the keycode in the transfer. just make sure the punch frames are transfered (they punch a hole in the first frame after developing) and using the timecode of this frame they can calculate all the necessary edge codes. by all means if you're getting a burn in transfer anyway make sure it has keycode, but it's nice to have a clean transfer to show people before the neg has been cut, plus i think it's more fun to edit.
