Trouble with Canon 1014 manual aperture

I have a Canon 1014 (NOT XL) in GREAT condition. everything works great but for the most part I am unable to use the manual aperture. I pull the knob out and the aperture is supposed to open all the way to 1.4 but it stays at 32. I have gotten it to work a few times but no real cause for it starting or stopping.

Anyone else have this problem or a solution? I imagine it might be an easy fix if I open the camera....but the camera works so well and I would hate to mess it up

Hehe, this has been discussed a lot in this forum, as it is a very common problem in Canon's 814 and 1014. I suggest to try with the "Search" tool above.

I went through the same problem with my 1014 over a year ago before taking it to Spectra Films in LA. It'll cost you around $250 to have it fixed.

I believe it's a aged electronic component that caused this since the manual aperture control is electronic and not mechanically driven. Not a really big deal since the built in meter is very accurate unless you are shooting into the light, but you can compensate for this using the shutter angle exposure dial beside the fps switch.

The Canons are not exactly easy to open up... I tried.

thanks. I'll do a search. and actually, now knowing it's an electronic thing and it'll pretty much cost me new camera I'll just start looking for a camera to jump to if the auto goes out. Thanks a million everyone!

No no, nothing to d with electronics.. it's just a rubber piece! The rubber gets hard with ages. Only have to replace it.

my 1014 has a similar problem, but i have no manual iris control when i touch slightly the zoom speed control selector...! At the beginning i thought it was the selector for auto or manual exposure (near on/off ring interruptor) and many here on the forum says that the internal rubber element was not ok; but after i discovered that the zoom speed control at the right of the camera is the responsable. Someone can explain me what happen? Where in EU or in US can i ship the camera for assistance? (I stay in Italy). Thanks to all and excuse me for my bad english.

hey,

yeah i've seen an 814 (not mine, thankfully) that had a similar problem with the manual aperture. you could pull it out and move it, and it would move, but after you stopped moving it, it would swing back to closed, i guess it could work still in that situation if you worked out the constant speed that you had to wind it towards open for it to stay on one setting...

what other notorious defects do the non xl 814/1014s have?
