Are you shy?

Post by Old Uncle Barry »

Of getting it out in public? Your cine camera of course I mean!
Must admit that on occasions I think twice before starting to film. The sound of a cine camera attracts attention like no other and I feel a little self concious with all these digital people about using mobile phones to take crap video clips!
I really must try and overcome this hangup

Sometimes I am more shy to get out a film camera than I would be to whip out something else in public 8O

There are times when people don't appreciate something with a big lens. THen there are other times when you get into a conversation with somebody who recognises it. I was in Bournemouth a few weeks ago and a guy said "Was that a super 8 you were filming with? I was admiring your camera".

I find that as long as you use something reasonably modern looking most people have absolutely no idea it's not a camcorder.

Among the people that know the difference there's a big percentage who think it's really cool.

There's of course a remainder who will hassle you about not using video. I've found there is a high correlation between this and being a real jackass in other facets of life, so I don't let their opinions bother me at all.

The simple answer for them is "Because I enjoy it."

when i recently shot some stage act performance at a small stage scene on DV i decided to shoot some Fuji 500T with my neat chainsaw 310XL simultaneously - placed by the sound/light engineer - lets say i got a lotto audience when i fired up the "8".

however, who am I to bother.....?

I get a little self-conscious when I'm out shooting. I was camping in Carpinteria SB a couple of weeks ago and filming my kids with my Canon 518 when a guy on his bike stops and starts asking me all about my camera. "Is that a 16mm camera?" he asked. I explained. Turns out he was a video production teacher at a private school. He'd never seen a super 8 camera before. He was amazed that I was shooting REAL film.

I got attention last week when I was in Ensenada, Mexico shooting film at the "bufadora"--the blowhole (I hear there are only three in the world.) I was shooting with my Canon again. No one approached me, but I heard the American tourists whisper to each other, "I think that's one of those milimeter film cameras," "Doesn't look like a video camera, "You hear it whirr?"

I like filming people while they're using mini dv :)

Last weekend I was shooting R8 using a Chinon Master on a campsite, nobody batted an eyelid despite the racket it makes.

I find often people don't notice until you fire the thing up and it makes a noise...one reason I often prefer my Elmo 110 despite its bulk.

A few years ago, probably 2000, I was at my school reunion and filming some rap "artists" in the school theatre. They had 3 dv cams recording their performance, I shot a few seconds of super 8 with the big Elmo...and had one of the lads (teenagers) come up to me, complimenting me on my "cool old film camera, wish I had one".

but you're just as likely to have people say "Jesus, can you still get film for that thing?"...presumably they just think I am running it empty?

On my recent trip to Virginia, while I was filming on the beach I noticed a few people looking at me, but it probably was very hard to hear my Minolta Autopak 8 D-6. In fact, this camera when the handle is folded up looks like a camcorder. I was using the pistol grip of course, but it's a camera that doesn't seem to give a lot of attention. A few people did give me a smile or 2, no one seemed bothered by my filming. If any one did notice the camera they probably thought it was cool to see a 33 yr old using a Super 8, ha.

Try filming with a Bolex H16 or a Beaulieu ZM4008 in a hip district in Hong Kong, and you will get some stares of admiration. You are a different beast, compared to the rest of the ordinary pack.

When I was in Canada a few years back, filming with my Canon 1014E with a Kowa 8z anamorphic lens some girl came up to me and said: " Wow! I like that machine of yours man!" I hope she was refering to that camera of mine.

Old Uncle Barry, don't be shy it's a great opportunity to make some new friends when you are out filming.

Some arsehole skater punks with their daddy's Canon HV20 saw my 814xls and thought it comical to scream about my "old piece of shit camera" and urged me kindly to "upgrade that worthless shit, man!" But when I turned the tripod towards them (with the camera off as to not waste any film) they became bashful and skated away cursing. When I think back on it now I should have filmed them cursing and flipping the bird; it would have been interesting footage..

Another time I was shooting with my Mamiya 645 on a bridge and a rather nice gentlemen pulled his car up behind mine and came out with two cameras, one film(F5) one digital (5D) and we had a good discussion about photography.

That really sucks, Freddie. It is amazing how ignorant (and abusive) some video users are. It's like some of these people have a superiority complex.

I was filming beach volleyball with my Canon 1014E and some guy walking past tells his friend beside him that that guy (referring to me) is using "an old gookie camera." Then his friend turns and looks at me and laughs. Of course not as bad as your experience.

i like to be anonymous when i film but when i was in Amsterdam recently I foolishly took my Bolex H8, whilst filming outside central station I soon found myself surround by Japanese tourists! it was kind of flattering but scary - thank god i hadn't done anything stupid like leaving a lens cap on or something!

i really need to get a pocket sized spy camera!

What prompted me to start this thread was as follows: I was out filming an old friend of mine who owns five classic busses who was out parading the magnificent vehicles when he came over to me.
He said "You never are using film are you, didnt think you could get that stuff anymore"
I replied "Well you can still get diesel for those vehicles cant you?.Remember one of those is older (just) than my sixties D8L" I was using.
He bade me the best of luck with my footage and went about his business.
Good friend but I was secretly thing along the lines of first rate arsehole. :twisted:Hey Ho!
