Have you ever?

Post by mattse03 »

gone on a trip and upon leaving your house thought of a ideas for how to turn your adventure into a film? I did this on Saturday. Was going to cousins wedding shower in Hunstville, Texas a good drive from where I live (Ennis, Texas) got some cool shots on the way and then we would head for Houston to the Astros game. So we get to huntsville and I am showing the family my "antique" camera. I check my film cart and what do you know EXPOSED! I knew I should of brought more carts with me. I had thought out a good editing scheme and flow of the film and decided I was going to do a voice-over to narrate it. So now I am gonna have this film with no real connection to anything..what to do what to do..

All i can say is this...

A film has 3 births:

1st Birth - the script or conception
2nd Birth - the shoot
3rd Birth - the edit

They could each be perceived as quite different films. It's always good to look at your footage and try not to see what you were aiming for when shooting or planning, but to look at what you've actually got with fresh, open eyes and mind - you may have a film yet, but not what you planned! :D

Hi Matt, I didn't mean to patronise you - I mean I'm sure you know about the three stages of film-making, but what a friend of mine from the National Film and Television School taught me is that they are like births, and he viewed a load of footage I had from a project that I had shelved, and showed me that my original vision for it was limiting my progress, and that a good film could still be derived from it, though not what i had planned.

Having said that, it is still shelved, as I've moved on... :)

So good luck with it

Lucas,
I didn't mean to be defensive in my post. So true about making a derivative from film you shot for an original purpose I am sure I will find a good place for the film I shot. :)
