8mm film and......cars!

Post by VideoFred »

:)

Film is fun...
Cars are fun.

Let's have them both.. double fun.
You will find cars on almost every 8mm reel.
I invite you all to show some nice car frames.
Old or new.. it does not matter.

1967, S8, Agfachrome, Opel Kadett:
(I have learned to drive with that little car)

1962, R8, Kodachrome, Renault C4 and a VW Beetle:

196... R8, Kodachrome, a Mini Morris:

1969, S8, Peruchrome, a nice Mercedes:

I want more 8)

I have seen so many old cars (brand new in context) I am jaded. However, a few scenes come to mind: a 58 white chevy impala with a black convertible top traveling on the coast #1 highway in California when the car are still new.

How about a family picnic and the parking lot looks like something out of Mel's Diner (American Graffiti) circa 1964. Every car was a gem. WOW.

Then there's the Las Vegas strip showing Sammy Davis headlining and the 1973 Mustangs driving around. The "old" cars were the 1968 Roadrunners and Chargers.

In sailing, how about seeing Laser #7 sail on SF Bay. (I think they are in the millions now if they still count on the sails!).

Here's one I found (exposed, undeveloped) in the takeup magazine of an Auricon camera I bought a couple years back:

Looks like Summer, 1968. The double lumps on the left side of the frame are the classic Auricon gate pattern.

I assume those are all films you have transfered in the past, right?
No way you can show something? That chevy..... 8)

Click on 'Faller 831 Film auf CD-rom"
In 1967, Faller has made a nice Super-8 film about the German Nürburgring. Real pictures mixed with pictures from Fallers HO-slotcar system. That film is a real collectors item, now.

I don't have any scans of my own, but when I saw the title, I thought of a short film a pal o' mine is working on.

Gears, Grease & Guitars

A lot of the car shots were filmed with an 8mm Wollensak at Formosa Raceway in California. It's recent stuff, but the mix of classic cars and 8mm film give it a feel of authentic footage of early '60s drag racing. Pretty cool stuff.

one day I will hit the Montery/Laguna Seca vintage races (coming up soon!) with a 8mm camera...the Bolex should give fine results and do exactly what you say - perfect match of technology and look and subject.

I'll need to revisit this thread when I get a few transfers done. I'm not even sure which cars I have on film anymore.

Well Fred, you asked for it. Here are some stills from this little film I made back in 1982 when I went to the motorshow at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham U.K. Not a very good DIY transfer hence the crappy stills. Camera was the Fujica ZXM 500 Single 8 on RT200 tungsten filming in available light.

Hope you like them:

Fred, how about this 5.7 litre V8 souped up 1973 Ford Mustang my Canadian cousin had back in the early 80's. What an awesome car! The engine sounds like a diesel electric generator when idle, and you do feel the G force when you step on the pedal ( 0-60 in 6 secs ) and most importantly it pulls the girls...only disadvantage is that it only does 8 miles to the gallon.

Those were the days before emission control and catalytic convertors.

Again captured on Fujichrome RT200

10-1 that great shot (love those plates) was taken up Seymour Mountain (or Cypress) at the parking lots?? We used to use those for self-taught Streets of San Francisco when they were covered with snow - one guy driving, the other hanging on the hood - hideaway wipers made the hood possible to hang on to - great fun. That's a fabulous beast. A friend had a similar Boss 351 stripped underneath the International Hotel in North Van. They were that good. And there were "some" emission controls on that car...some, but not much!

Spot on Mike, we were at the Seymour parking lot. Yeah you remember those old white and blue B.C. plates eh back at the time when Charlie's Angels were all the rage and almost every high school boy had a Farrah Fawcett poster.

Do you remember the Mustang in James Bond 007 Diamonds Are Forever with Sean Connery?
