Kodachrome 40 question

I just bought a canon 514XL-S for a price way too low and it came with 2 kodak kodachrome 40 cartridges. I have no clue what to do with them since the only one that develops 40T is Dwayne's photo in America. I life in western-europe. I am not old enough to have a creditcard so i cannot let Dwayne develop it or sell the cartridges on the internet to one of you guys or on ebay. See my problem ?

I can still get my hands on another 2 cartridges of Kodachrome 40 for like 15 dollars. People don't realise that the stuff in their old-wasted dust pile is actually pretty valuable. Any advices ? Should i just film some stuff with it and try sending it to dwayne ( wich i probaly dont have money for ), or sell it somewhere else. This is my first post btw.. not that it matters

If the cartridges are unopened there should be an expiry date on them. anything after 1990 might be okay, but you are taking a chance on who knows how the cartrides were stored. pre 1990 kodachrome tends to be off color. kodachrome II is processable, but expensive and time consuming, but not worth it unless your great aunt shot it years ago and forgot to get it processed. if they are exposed or half exposed, again you are taking a chance on processing someelse's film.

Dont watse your time or money on old film which may look garbage
after you process it .I have kodak ecktachrome sound film 50ft stored frozen and tested which works perfectly in you camera even in low light condions and can be processed at nano lab in austrailia.

tho with k40 you could spend as little as 4.88 to process it. E160 is another story!

Shoot it of course, worse thing could happen is that its super pink. B&W it after transfer, boost the contrast, there you go.

Dwaynes would surely accept a US$ cheque, but that would cost a lot to have prepared by a bank in Europe. Imagine getting an American bank to produce a euro or pound check (my guess is most American banks would actually refuse, in my experience they don't realise there's a world out there).

Besides if he's too young to have a CC he's probably too young to have a chequebook.

What date is the K40? Do you have parents/relatives/friends who have CC's?

What about an international money order as payment? They're easily available from post offices.

Use the Wittner or Andec forwarding service. They do the work and they can be paid using EU Euro banking. Which is free of extra costs. Takes some time extra though and costs somewhat more too. The Euro-dollar advantage goes to the midle-man.

Kodachrome can be processed with good result while cartridges have considerable age. I would use till max 10 year without much hesitation. Could work till max 20 but things get tricky. You will get faint magenta images when the film was too old. Not funny at Euro 10-15 processing costs.

Some USA member could start an informal K40 processing service by delivering the film to a local ***markt and do the postal service fore and after. But getting some reward from this likely makes it the same price as Dwayne's directly.

I've been using Dwaynes but may use Wittner or Andec next time, since I'm in the Shires.

I'm very positive about any cheap Kodachrome. Always ask for a 90% discount from the seller. Say something like it's 'almost' impossible to get it processed. Good for nothing else but scratching on the emulsion, or testing cameras. Bring the price down. Tell 'em it will be faded, low contrast and off colour.

But really it's fine for personal stuff. You can adjust contrast and maybe make it B&W in the post processing computer edit... Here is a youtube link to (the worst it gets) a 1978 Kodachrome without any computer post processing... it was 8mm btw, not super 8. Pet Bebo's Funeral

When you have plastic money or paypal, it's really nice with fresh Kodachrome from our forum members John Schwind or Super8france (I don't work for them).

Larger British post offices now offer dollars and euros over the counter. While it is certainly not good practise Dwayne's do accept cash, through the post. And they do a really good job of developing the film which, because of the conversion rate with GB, is effectively half price ...

Thanks for all the replies. I am male but i just liked the avatar haha ( who doesnt ). Anyways, it's good to see a german company that develops K40. Ill look for the expiring date. Thanks for all the help

Edit: wait, it sends stuff to dwayne. Maybe i can find a local film company that sends it to dwayne's. I have been stupid

It's really very funny that an "informal forwarding service" for K40 has been mentioned here as I have seriously considered doing just exactly that for film students and others who are paying way too much at the film schools for processing ($16 & up). I have made a contact in the local !@#-Mart and more importantly in the Fuji Lab where they are forwarded prior to going to Dwaynes so I could keep close track of their progress. I've no idea how much any of the companies in Europe or GB charge for the service. If some of the EU members of the board want to find out and let me know I would be willing to put together a service on the basis of actual expense plus say the gallon or two of gas, that's petrol to my friends on the other side of the pond, it would take for me to pick up/ deliver and re-post back to the EU.
