HTI system matching

Post by S8 Booster »

Thanks for your information Pedro.
I will check out the additional fan issue when time is due.
Generally I deal with almost all sorts of fans so I think it will be no problem to find a very good solution for this system.

(The GS 1200 (with standard lamp) seem to project insuffucient light on even basis compared to the Bauer T610 which comes out far better for one reason or another)

Thanks!

I agree with all of you people that a good movie projection is much better then a video projection. A good movie projection is much better then a LCD or DLP projection. But today you can buy a excellent LCD projector for less then US$ 2000. By the other side, what is the projection quality that we can achieve just adapting a stronger lamp? I'm not talking of a good projector builded to large rooms use. I'm talking about changing an ordinary projector lamp. Does it give good results? How much it would cost? Will projector fan keep lamp at right temperature?

I have the T610 (with 150 W lamp and 1:1,3 lens) as well as the GS1200 (with 200 W lamp and 1:1,0 lens). The available 1:1,1 lens for the Bauer is very problematic, as the pan focus of the Bauer is not such precise, that such a open stop can be used. The very best lens for the Bauer is the 1:1,3 from older models.
When I bought the GS, I took with me my T610 and we projected in parallel with both machines at Bavaria Film, because I could not believe that the GS should be so much better. And I changed my mind. The GS1200 projection is brighter, sharper, has more contrast, that let slightly unsharp footage appear sharp. And the sharpness is constant from left to right and not jumping, as with the all-plastic T610. The frame is sharp until its edges. Therefore I spent the money and bought the GS 1200, after many hours of comparing. The light output is very good for average living rooms with screens up to 2 meters. Another plus of the GS1200 is the fact, that is shows much less film abrasion and dirt/dust in the film chanel and the head area. The Bauer I have to clean after nearly every film, the Elmo not.
After over one year of intensive use of the Elmo, I also noted, that the sound heads are of much better quality. For the Bauer, I needed a new pair of heads nearly every 2 years, the Elmo shows a constant good sound quality. The only defect I had, is a worn belt and a defective speed control board, both easyly available at Soligor/Germany.

The S8 projectors with HTI lamp for large screens are all adaptions of existing machines for standard halogen lamps. So if you take one of these standard projectors and make the adaption, it will work. The best models to convert to HTI are the Beaulieu 708 and the Elmo GS1200. Probably it will be possible with Elmo ST1200, too. ALL projectors need an additional fan for cooling the gate area, even the GS1200. The HTI lamp will cost about EUR 200 (but this is the same price as lamps for comparable video beamers, too!) and the supply module about EUR 500. The lamp is interchangeable with halogen lamp, that means, that you can use the brighter lamp only when neccessary. The conversion can also be done professionally and costs about EUR 2000.
