Neat Video users?

Post by MovieStuff »

A client sent me this link to something called "Neat Video". It is a noise reduction plug in for NLE systems and the examples look pretty impressive.

Anyone use this?

someone else on this list mentioned it in a post a couple months back and I ended up buying it. It's an amazing little program.

I bought it too a couple of years ago and use it on 35mm film scans (stills). Results seem very good as long as you don't apply too much, or it can make things look a bit like plastic.

EDIT: Actually I bought neat image but I expect it gives the same results.

How would this help with frames shot on film?

It can reduce the grain from film transfers, but like tonewheels mentioned, you don't want to over use it or it looks fake.

I mostly use it for regular DV and HDV video shot in low light situations with high gain. It does a very good job of reducing the noise without blurring the image.

So noise from footage shot on video or recorded from TV, and grain from footage shot on film and transfered to video is handled by the same algorithm? Did anyone actually try it with footage shot on FILM? All I see here are video examples of footage shot on video.

probably, yes. what these plugins do is determine what's image data and what's not. typically using both frequency analysis, motion compensation and statistical prediction, then remove everything else, be it film grain, video noise, electric interference or whatever. the results can be spectacular but it can also look fake. i prefer to use basic algorithms like my own plugins (see homepage) that don't remove grain but rather just soften it. it removes some of the dancing and crawling while preserving most of the grain structure.

Here's a good example of a scanned film frame de-noised using Neat.

Neat. ~:?)

The one problem we still have with the Super 8 negs is white grain/noise in the blacks, (and then only if the film is under-exposed). Crushing can only take you so far. This program looks to be a solution, but I wonder, (before I get off my butt and try it), is the noise reduction that comes with Premiere Pro comparable?...because we already have that.

I have been using it for three years already. And I do recommend this soft.

Is she mainly digital? I'd be interested to see how it works for both digital and film work.
