16mm zoom verses 35mm zoom... Do you get the same framing?

Post by gene_can_sing »

Is a 240mm zoom lens on a 16mm movie camera identical in-terms of zoom distance to a 240mm zoom lens on a 35mm movie camera?

What I'm asking is: If both the 16mm and 35mm cameras were placed at an identical spot; we then zoom to the maximum 240mm to a person who was standing 100 meters away.

Will this person appear exactly the same size in the framing of both the 16mm and the 35mm camera?

Or will the person appear larger in one camera? Am I correct in assuming that the person will be framed closer in the 16mm camera?

I asked a semi-similar question a few months ago, but that was regarding zoom ratios of a 35mm lens on a super 8. So this question has a twist! LOL.

Also, thanks to Mattias. I've learned a ton from you.

You will get considerably higher magnification with the 16mm format if you used the same lens. It will be more than double the image size.
