UK camera fairs/Swapmeets

Post by Technicolor »

Hi all,

Where can I find out about camera fairs and swapmeet type events in the UK? Are there many events related to cine equipment?

I'm also thinking of subscribing to Amateur Cine Enthusiast magazine, is this any good?

Cheers!

ACE was the first thing I did, then, IAC, too. Some of the many cine clubs still shoot film, not many, but there are some.
I'd like to link up with film shooters for making productions. I'm in the SW north of Bristol.

The Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain, PCCGB.

http://www.pccgb.org should get the web site.

It is for all camera collectors, so the majority are still. However all the camera fairs etc. include cine, and articles on cine appear in the excellent club magazine.

If you are anyway interested in collecting old cameras this is the UK club to join. The magazine is worth the membership fees alone.
New web site and this is cine page http://www.picsntech.co.uk/cine.html

Cheers guys, think I'll subscribe to ACE and I've sent off for a PCCGB brochure.

(PS) Reg8, did you order any K40 from photomart.co.uk in the end?

Hi James

Glad to hear that you're subscribing to ACE. I think we should all support the publications and events that help to bring super8 into the public eye and let the world know that we're here.

I've been subscribing to ACE for several years now and must admit that it would benifit from an injection of new ideas, perhaps we should all start contributing to the letters pages and get some discussions and articles in there about workprinters and such.

ACE also run the 'Ten Best' competition every year and it would be great to see some of the names on the forum submitting films for scrutiny. Perhaps we should all meet for the viewing and judging and spawn a UK Super 8 film festival?

Mike.

ps Any one interested in subscribing to ACE details can be sought from; ace@globalnet.co.uk

Hi Mike,

Perhaps an "Internet Page" would aid the ACE magazine, giving information about such brilliant resources as this forum and the other super 8 websites.

That 10 best compo looks good, perhaps we should find a group of local super8'ers and submit a collaborative effort!

James,

Not yet. I'm still waiting for the stopmotion K40 from Jessop's to be returned from Kodak.
It that comes out nicely, then I'll get some.
Has anyone else checked out the numbers as to jittery carts?

Hi, look in the back of amateur photographer, comes out once a week on tuesdays...i think the next fair is at Tolworth, this is usually quite a small fair, only about 15 tables or so. Recommended fairs are Guildford, Sidcup, Beaconsfield, Wolverhamton, most of them offer an early bird entrance fee
about double or treble the price, if the fair opens at 10.00 am
say, an early bird fee will get you in at least an hour before
the doors open.If you are attending a fare, go for an early bird ticket, get there as early as you can.Usually you can walk round whilst some stalls are still being assembled, you have to consider that a lot of in house trading is done very early on, sometimes even before
the early bird ticket starts, once your in go round each stall quickly, if you see a desirable camera going cheap, test it, then buy it.One or two dealers do buy quality cine cameras, you need to get at them before they or i do!!! Sometimes there is little or no cine at these fairs, other times there is, luck of the draw, dont see many quality projectors at these fairs though..

I like your idea of getting a group of local super 8ers together to produce a film for the 'Ten Best', that's probably the only way I would actually get around to doing it.

Perhaps we should once again pursue the quest for the Sussex super8ers?!

Andy

So, you live in Croydon [land of Ikea] I live in Worthing and James, are you in Lewes? If so, middle ground would be somewhere around Haywards Heath or Horsham. Perhaps we should just go for it and arrange to meet up in a pub or something with whoever else wants to come a long and see if we can pull something together?

Any one else interested?

Andy and Mike,

This sounds like it could be pretty cool. More people would make it easier in many ways, particulary with coming up with ideas and also in terms of equipment.

What about Lucas Lightfeat? he introduced me to this forum, although he lives in London which may pose a problem.

Hi all,

My name's not really Lightfeat, by the way ;) I suppose you guessed that already.

I live in london, but i used to live in Brighton and Lewes, for many years. I am super busy until the end of June though, but I might be able to meet up with you guys - I'd certainly like to.

I am going to Granada, Spain, in the Summer (end of July) to shoot about 25 rolls of K40, making a sync sound 8 minute film in and around the old part of this beautiful ancient City. I will be shooting on my blimped 25fps crystal sync Nizo 6080 and recording sound with some mics I'm buying this week and a borrowed Tascam DAT recorder. I need to make a shotgun mic shockmount & handle. I'll be transferring by WP and editing on a computer. I'm just telling you this for info of what I'm up to. I hardly ever shoot home movies anymore, which is a shame I guess. I will no doubt shoot some this summer though. My career aspiration is to be a film director, so that's what Super8 is about for me these days, though I do sometimes think I'm mad for not using video, as it would make my life so much easier.

Oh, the film is a sort of romantic comedy, but that could give you the completely wrong idea, I guess. It will be in 3 languages, and is a comedy of errors, mostly linguistic. I speak a little French, and very little Spanish, as will the male lead, who is also a hopeless fool. The female lead is French and sophisticated. The most important thing is that it's funny.

Lucas,

That sounds really cool! Who are you making the film for if you dont mind me asking? Do you work for yourself or a company?
I'd love to be able to make film using super8 with sound

Hi Lucas,

I'm there with technicolor. It sounds like a great idea. Will it be possible to see the film, I'd even pay for it as I'm moving to Canada and won't get to see Spain before we leave.

Let me know, I could pay by sending you some cartridges or something.
