DIY Telecine Video Transfer machines???

Post by gene_can_sing »

Hi,

I've seen a number for listing for these DIY Telecine machines that work with a projector and a camcorder where you can transfer 8mm film to your camcorder. An example of the item on the link below

http://cgi.ebay.com/Telecine-Transfer-8 ... dZViewItem

Has anyone used these machines? How do they work? How is the quality when telecining from super 8mm to a camcorder (mini DV tape)?

For more critical projects, I would have a real telecine, but for uncritical stuff, this seems like a cheaper telecine alternative.

They are crap. You are better off projecting the image to a A4 paper on the wall, and shooting it directly with a miniDV camera. Seriously.

I second that.

I have tried a few of these and always had better results projecting onto white paper and just recording the projected image.

If you get a variable speed projector to can controll and lose the flicker.

Just set up the video camera up close next to the projector, adjust the running speed and record the image.

On the video camera always use manual focus and switch off steady shot, this would be if you were shooting off a4 white paper or using the transfer box, but best to just shoot off paper!

Good luck,
Chris.

A winning bid of $169.95? OUCH!

Get a first surface mirror from Edmond Scientific, about $20 I would guess. I think you can get small rear projection screens from BHPhotoVideo for about $30. Put the two together and you have the same thing as this "machine."

I would never use one for serious work but I've thought it might make an interesting effect. I'll wait until I can pick on up at a garage sale for about $10.

Thirded.

Utterly useless. Even the ones with good brand names.
