Who has plans for reloadable S8 cartridge / Magazine?

Pedro sent me some pictures a few years back of a design he had worked out for a 200' cartridge. I wish I had them around. Now this is really want I want to see. I'm sure if we had this it would be easy enough to buy film not in a cartridge.

No, Kahl have a perforation machine for Super 8, DS8 and Reg8mm, and the stock available in 200ft spools is ORWO.

They sells Kodak Super 8 stocks too, but in the conventional 50 ft. cartridges, and Kodak's color negative stocks in 50 ft reloadable cartridges. (12 or 14 mts.).

Great! I see a lot of folks are really interested. I am going to try to get the ISO specs and a old 200ft sound cart or 2 if I can and then see what I can get started.

The design will have to be:

1. Simple
2. Still allow 50 ft carts.
3. Relatively inexpensive
4. Rugged, reliable, and re-loadable
5. Stable as a rock, hopefully with metal gate.

I have info an a local machinist / designer type that could probabbly work out the details for me. I really have high hopes that this can work. Then we can all enjoy long takes with a larger variety of stock.

I have to rebuild my failing computer system, so I may be out of touch a few days. But I will be in touch with those who want to help pursue this. And if any body has an old 200ft cart to lend / sell me. I don't want to order the $175.00 ones from Japan if I can avoid it. Anybody shooting a 200fter, please try to retain the cartridge and send it to me.

I was working along the lines of just cutting the top off a 200' cart and the make a reloadable cart to mate to it. I messed around with it for a while but it just isn't practical. What would be practical is to use the 200' cart as a starting point to design your own cart. I am not an engineer but I feel that it would not be too hard to make a bavairia film cart clone for MUCH less money. Make it from plastic (who needs a machined block of aluminum?) glued togeather. Then get a sprocket from a old projector or LaVezzie and pull the pressure pad off a Fujica Single-8 camera (they use the same perforations as super-8). Don't re-invent stuff you can pull from an old camera. When I get the time I will press on with the 200' mag I have been screwing around with. I just scored a Fujica ZM800 sound camera off eBay that I will make a 200' cart adapter for. That is a MUCH easyer thing to do than a super-8 mag adapter. They already have a pressure plate so you just cut a hole in the top of a single-8 cart and fit a 200' mag to the top of the camera!

Chew on that for a while :lol:

Actually the only way to load 200ft of film (Kahl or whatever) is using the new 200 ft magazine of Bavaria Films, (you know, that mag costs a bunch of $$$ and it's specially designed for Beaulieu and another sophisticated cameras, and these cameras needs some motifications for this purpose).
So I built a simple device to split a 200 ft roll in four 50 ft rolls to be loaded in 50 ft reloadable cartridges.
ORWO films are manufactured in Germany and Kahl sells various of their stocks such as:

- Kahl 24: B&W reversal stock ISO 200 (Beautiful contrast and a little bit less grainy than Kodak Tri-X !):

- Kahl 21 B&W negative film ISO 100: Very fine-grain and low-contrast film. When is correctly exposed looks like 16 mm:

- Kahl UT 18 Chrome color reversal stock ISO 50D. I never shot this stock, but some guys says that this stock it's very grainy.

The reloadable cartridge thing is something I can get behind. There's been 4 pages of comments on the new camera idea, but the cartridge is a better idea, I think. I would also like to see some accompanying gadget that will allow you to load and unload the film so you don't have to send your cartridge out after each roll. And, I think the cartridge would have to be of the 50-foot variety. That way all cameras could use them, not just those designed or modified for 200-foot rolls. Also, maybe the reloadables would facilitate something like 1000 foot (approximately 304.8 meters for the enlightened SI users) rolls becoming available in s8. Buying in bulk would help with the cost. Do you think re-loads could somehow open up more s8 stock? Like all the lovely negative stocks out there for 35/16 mm?

Sure!
Until 1992 the old comrades in Russia sold Svema Super 8 stock film in two ways:
In 50 ft plastic sealed cartridges or in small cans filled with 50 ft of film.

If you bought several Kaccema reloadable carts, you could save money buying those cheap cans with 50 ft of film.

So, when the Russian filmmakers needed to process the film, they sent it to the laboratories in those small cans. The reloadable cartridges stayed at home.
