Question for Roger about Transfer Service
HI Roger,
I have a question about your inhouse transfer service. When you Transfer at 18 Fps, Does the frame pattern look like this:
1+1+2+2+ 3 +4+4+5+5+ 6 +7+7+8+8+ 9 +10+10+11+11+ 12 +13+ 13+14+14+ 15 +16+16+17+17+ 18
So what you have is every frame duplicated except 3,6,9,12,15 and 18 are only recorded once?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I would imagine that it would look much smoother than say, 1+2+3+3+3, 4+5+6+6+6, etc.
Thanks

I don't know who Roger is, but you seem as uncertain about various aspects of film and video technical issues as persons I've helped educate on this webboard such as "mattias" and "moviestuff" (and somebody else whose webboard name escapes me, somebody who didn't understand the enormous gap between production HD and HDV cameras and format, but I'm too lazy to look them up) so I'll take a shot at helping answer your question.
Real telecines scan in pixels, not "frames". This is because real telecines do not use projectors or video cameras or mirror boxes or shoot off a wall.
To run in "real time", they employ a method known as "pulldown". Here is a link to a webpage which explains the basics of how this process works:
http://www.sfu.ca/sca/Manuals/ZAAPf/f/film_video.html
I hope this helps begin your journey to understanding many video and film concepts. I encourage you to develop this as it will lead to improved results in your film-making efforts, and avoid much of the unexpected superstition and fantasy surrounding the pursuit at the hobby level.

Your name suits you! I want Roger's response not yours. What you describe are non discreet frames which lack quality in terms of sharpness! You are apparently clueless!low grade moron wrote:I don't know who Roger is, but you seem as uncertain about various aspects of film and video technical issues as persons I've helped educate on this webboard such as "mattias" and "moviestuff" (and somebody else whose webboard name escapes me, somebody who didn't understand the enormous gap between production HD and HDV cameras and format, but I'm too lazy to look them up) so I'll take a shot at helping answer your question.

nah, he's not clueless, but i cant stand the partonizing answers either ;)marc wrote:I want Roger's response not yours. What you describe are non discreet frames which lack quality in terms of sharpness! You are apparently clueless!
in fact interlaced pulldown is a very good way to slow down footage for a TV monitor, it will look much smoother than if you just try to duplicate frames.
if you need it for progressive display (ie film print, beamer, computer screen instead of TV) you can either duplicate frames (sharp but stuttery), blend frames (smooth but soft) or try some adative interpolation of new frames (slow and sometimes with weird artifacts).

He is clueless for several reasons. One, he does not know who Roger is and second, he assumes that any transfer will have non discreet frames. The last thing I want is non discreet frames, especially when shooting at a low frame rate like 18 frames per second when your shutter speed does not grant you the sharpest images and when transfering to NTSC video standards!christoph wrote:nah, he's not clueless, but i cant stand the partonizing answers either ;)marc wrote:I want Roger's response not yours. Oh, he knows. And we all know him. He's just trying to bait me or Mattias into an argument. Sorry, won't work. In fact, Marc, if you want to discuss the Rank pulldown patterns used by our WorkPrinter and Sniper units, you'll need to contact me offlist. I refuse to post in any thread Mr. Moron is present in.marc wrote: he does not know who Roger is ...

Roger, I sent you an e mail with the same question. I realize that you are busy between your business and answering questions on the forum so that is why I posted in addition to sending you that e mail.
Thanks,
Marc

You are right! I forgot to double frame # 13. I'll edit that at once!audadvnc wrote:"...avoid much of the unexpected superstition and fantasy surrounding the pursuit at the hobby level."
I liked your Canadian plutocrat persona better.
Marc, I only count 29 frames in your version? Don't you need 30?
