arriflex st question - orange viewfinder?
Moderator: Andreas Wideroe
I have heard of a little bit of a disadvantage with Arriflex cameras, even though I have never used them myself. Some guy I was talking with who used to work in the industry claims that you have to keep running these particular cameras on a regular basis to keep them in good working order. It is something to do with the oil that lubricates them or something similar. Apparently, you cannot have them lying around for long periods of time because problems will develop. Then they will need servicing which can be expensive.
Arri standard mount lenses from schneider were sold in between 50€ and 150€ last week, and two 400' magazines with motor went for 35€ each. What's a magazine for the r16 sold for? The cameras are abot 500€, and do not come close to the 1000€.
My theory is that the pros are abandoning the ST/SB now, for what reasons ever, (they may be incompatible now with production standards, super16, sync sound, digital, whatever) and that there is no collector's market to receive them. Compare the look of a bolex and arri, there might never be a colector's market for arri cameras. Actually all arri auctions i followed had very little visitors, and even less bidders. Mine had 3 (me included) persons placing bids. Eclairs and the newer arris cost a lot more.
Bolex and beaulieu auctions ausually have bidding wars, with 10+ people sniping the last seconds.
Hmm, i'd say if you're looking for a 16mm camera, and can live with the S limitations, you're in for bargains these days. Perhaps they become even cheaper? When i begun looking for cameras, arri s were about $2000, and hard to find. Times change!

I had a look at E-bay just now and I certainly didnt see any cheap Arri gear. Most cameras were going for several thousands of dollars. Among the lenses currently for sale are are a Schneider lens going for $1800, a Canon 600mm zoom ($9,999) and a Kinoptik 300mm lens for $413 and there is still 3 more days to go with the Kinoptik lens so prices may start jumping up at any time for that particular item. Bear in mind too that these prices are in US dollars and because I am Australian, I would have to fork out almost double the amount because of the exchange rate. So I still dont see any bargains around with Arri gear.

with arri mounts and intended for 16mm cameras? doesn't sound like very useful items to me unless you're shooting astronomy or birds. are the 10 mm primes as expensive?a Canon 600mm zoom ($9,999) and a Kinoptik 300mm lens
i've never ever seen a camera except in super8 that used one time only batteries, but on the other i've never seen an arris s that took batteries at all, but needed an external battery pack or power adapter. the sr's take camcorder style rechargeables though.Patrick wrote:I have a question about Arriflex cameras in general. Do they usually take rechargeable batteries or one time only batteries?

It needs external power supply, a little unusual 8V. Works fine with 7,2V Battery packs like used for the remote controlled racing cars, but then you lose the fastest fps posiible with 8V. There is no way to mount the battery on the camera, so you have to deal with either carrying the battery pack in your pocket or place it somewhere near the camera, with cables spanning in between.
It has both advantages and disadvantages, i'm on the one hand happy to have litterally dozens of options how to feed that camera with power (thinking of the beaulieu's battery issues, yawn..), but then the internal battery is VERY convenient.
When you're not a pro with a crew, some of these "pro" specialities can turn out to be a little inconvenient
BTW, if you're interested, look in european ebay sites (simply search international). 2 More complete with lenses were sold in the 400 - 600€ range, the cheaper one was in perfect working condition, according to the seller.
When looking for lenses, a 300 or 600mm lens, these are very unusual ones for 16mm. The 10mm Schneider prime (i'm happy i have this one, i tested it and it serves my wide angle needs perfectly) was mounted on most arris i've seen recently.
But keep in mind that these schneider primes can be 50 years old these days, they will not be up to modern standards, and may show glass disease, like fungus, or speration. One 10mm was sold last week for under 100€, as far as I remember.
