I snipe without a program but I know what you mean. I felt that way at first. But then I realized that, the way ebay has things set up, you really don't have much choice. Most true auctions are about who wants to spend the most for an item and the auction will go on and on and on until someone runs out of money. Ebay is about who has the highest bid when the clock runs out. The irony is that I have won items on ebay that I would have gladly paid twice as much for in a regular auction. Therefore, I stopped feeling too bad about the sniping approach since, with or without it, the amount paid is often still way below what I would have paid in a "true" auction. Ebay sort of set up the mechanism that encourages sniping, so what can you do?
As I said before, placing an early proxy bid simply means you lose to someone with more patience and 50 cents more than you. Who wants to lose an auction that way? No one. Who wants to win an auction that way? Everyone! ;)

I am glad to report that I have beat many people without any use of software sniping programs. You have to develop the feel for manual sniping That is how I won the Bolex Anamorphot 16/32/1.5x the other day. The bracket on this thing is worth more than I paid for the whole thing; that is, if you can find the bracket to start with.
I KNEW that someone was going to jump at it the last second. I ambushed them
They went down diving like a duck shot dead in mid flight
The poor devil hehehehe
And all in the last 5 seconds 8)
But Lunar, I expect you have the advantage of a very much faster internet connection. I dont know if theres anyone else here on 56K but trying to stick bids in the closing seconds just isnt possible.

Yes, I do have a very fast internet connection. In such dog fights you need to have a fighter jet with a better feedback mechanism. A 56K connection is like an old British Hawkeye jet facing an F-16
It is war out there, you know
Surely if so many people are 'sniping' at the end then an eBay queuing system will probably come into play and it could be a matter of luck who actually gets the final bit on the button.
However, one thing I have noticed is that that there is an lot of gear out there. If you miss out once it will probably turn up again. A few times I have been out bid, then a week or so later a similar item turns up and one gets it a bit cheper as the main biddr against you got his/her item on the auction you lost. So instead of worrying about sniping, check what is new daily under favourites.
