Patrick wrote:Roger, regarding the difference in aspect ratio between super 8 and the various High Definition formats, I guess there will be a black space on the left and right of the image? To some people, this might look a little odd but I guess it's something we'll all have to get used to when viewing super 8, regular 16mm or old movies in general on widescreen tvs as widescreen television becomes more commonplace. To me, the 'letterbox' format (black on top and bottom) looks more natural and pleasing to the eye.
I just transferred a bunch of Regular 8 with the Workprinter and it's perfect for widescreen aspect ratio...the image area goes almost all the way to the sprocket-side edge of the film. I cropped out the leading and trailing frames and this puppy dog is ready for the big screen. (Most of the previous R8 I've done has had only a fraction of extra image if any at all between the sprockets...I wonder what kind of camera was used for this footage.)

The BCi5 model would be perfect for me...
fred,

did you contact the company about pricing? (could well be 3000+ for the BCi5). also, did you ask them about what would be better suited for your application the BCi4 or the BCi5? i could imagine the 4 to be quite a bit cheaper and actually better suited for transfers.

we currently have the decklink installed in a mac, but i'm getting another card to build a PC setup and that's what we'll use with the Z1, in theory at least.

Around 1200 Euros for the BCi5, 1800 Euros for the BCi4.
VAT 21% not included, I guess.

The man in charge is very film minded.. an exception.
He realy understands what I am doing.. and he's interested.
On their site you can download lots of PDF files.
It looks all very promising to me...
We'll see.

Can't you just use a digital still camera or a webcam?!

fred,

sounds promising indeed! actually it sounds a bit too good to be true, most cams i've seen with similair specs are twice as much.. let me know if you manage to get hold of a sample unit (o better yet, of two ;)

jörg, the problem with digital still cameras (beside massive storage problems if you go higher than 2mpix) are possible flicker problems, limited shutter life, and direct link to the computer. webcams are general crappy in terms of dynamic range and color and have a lot of noise.

i asked my local dealer if i could test the decklink studio card, he agreed, but they dont have it yet so i have to wait for some weeks. what Mainboard will you be using for your PC? The Studio Card is PCIe, i found it hard to find a board serving more than 2 slots, the ASUS P5W64-WS PRO with 4 PCIe slots, is the only one i found, guess i'll go for it.

christoph just said it, plus you have a quadratic Pixel Format f.e. a jpeg image sequence that has to be convertet into video aspect Ratio it can be time consuming. But in theory it would be possible, infact i use a Nikon D70 and a Kindermann Dia Projector with Parallel port for automated Dia Capturing with a Software that stears the whole process, works great very fast too.
