Hi,
there will be a fireworks display over
Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong at 8pm on 1st of July .
Is filming fireworks possible with a super 8 ? Which stock should I use ?
Please advice.
Thank you all !

I just got a bauer royal 10E from ebay, with a timed exposure mechanism. Maybe this would look pretty cool with fireworks on regular color film.

Yes, it is perfectly possible to film fireworks in super 8. I have got good results using Kodachrome 40 film with my Canon 1014 E camera running at 18 fps. Remember to cancel the daylight filter. Manual exposure works best in this sort of situation of course. The aperture that I set, if I recall, was roughly about f4 I think. That was against a black night sky. However, if you're shooting with a harbour in the background, which I assume may also be brightly lit with different light sources, the whole scene may be a bit brighter than the scene that I was filming. The exposure required may be a little different. It also depends on the distance of the fireworks as well. If the scene you're shooting is far away in the distance, you may have to open up the aperture slightly. Bracket exposures among different takes to be sure if you can spare enough film.

By the way, do you have the test results for the k3 yet by any chance?

I shot fireworks at a baseball park (comiskey) using k25 8mm film.
I didnt have to filter it since the film was for lights. It came out great.

Thanks for all the advice !

I will probably film the fireworks with both super 8 and 16mm.

Just finished filming the fireworks using K-40 (super 8)and a spool of 100' Fuji T-125 (16mm ) . Though a little bit worry about the results , it always make me feel good to shoot something. :)
