List of available D Mount lenses?

Post by Silfver8 »

Does anyone know if there is a list of all available D Mount lenses (that would fit regular/double 8mm Bolex cameras) - and/or some place that 'rates' these lenses?

No - just surf ebay and start watching the bolex auctions...you will learn quite a bit there...otherwise, the only reviews you will have a chance of finding are any writeups in the old British 8mm magazine...they are all from the 40s, 50s and 60s I believe...again: ebay.

To be honest, you simply have to run a roll and see if you like it or not. if you do great. If not, buy a different brand of camera.

The only real 8mm information that exists anymore is in old people's heads and most of them are dying off everyday now...not on the net...

D-mount lenses suitable for use on the B8, C8, and D8 series Bolex cameras include the 5.5mm f/1.9 Pizar, 5.5mm f/1.8 Switar, 12.5mm f/2.8 Yvar Filtin, 12.5mm f1.5 Switar, 13mm f/1.9 Yvar, 13mm f/1.8mm Yvar, 13mm f/0.9 Switar, 25mm f/2.5 Yvar, 36mm f/2.8 Yvar, 36mm f/1.8 Switar, 10-30mm f/2.8 Berthiot zoom, and 8-40mm f/1.9 Berthiot zoom. Again, the Focal Press book, BOLEX 8 GUIDE, is your best reference.

You cant go wrong with any of the Kern Paillard lenses for the Bolex cameras. The Yvars are the entry level lenses but they're still excellent, the Switars are top of the range. What you get with the Switars is an extra f stop or two over the Yvars. They're also meant to be sharper although when I look at footage I've taken, I can't tell which of the two I used.

The one lens I would definately track down is the f0.9 13mm Switar. That gives you nearly three f stops over the corresponding Yvar and allows you to film in situations you couldn't hope to with the basic lens. They cost £75-100 when they come up on ebay but you wont regret the outlay.
