Lynch's statement that the look of DV is terrible and he "loves it" seems contradictory to his own beginings. He sacrificed and lived in poverty for some years to shoot on 35mm film his "Eraserhead" instead of opting to shoot on the much less expensive and lesser 16mm. Now we are supposed to believe DV is equal to 35mm of old? Anyone who has seen a restored 35mm print from the silent days (now over 80 years ago) knows this is BS. I think he just likes to make a splash as being different. I hate to say it, but I think his best work maybe the TV series he did called "Twin Peaks". Maybe due to the limits he worked under while doing a prime time TV show. Orson Welles said that without limits you cannot produce great art. Lynch seems to lose his way at times. He does make some very interesting images and once in awhile an interesting film.

Uh.... Elephant Man? By far the best Lynch film and one of the best American films of the '80s.

Seems like Lynch made the turn about half way through the Twin Peaks movie. The film makes a dramatic shift in attitude. I think Lynch after all the sacrifice and then success decided to take the money and run. Maybe the move to dv is his way of grubbing it again, a way of looking for his lost passion.

What money? The Twin Peaks movie bombed.

I still want to see the extra hour of scenes with Twin Peaks regulars that were cut out, all the funny stuff with Pete, etc. Apparently all the goofy hijinks didn't mesh well with the deeply depressing Laura Palmer story.

For some reason looking at these posts clicked for me what's wrong with Lynch and tape - he was one of the directors who contributed a scene to a film, forget the title, wherein each director shot one roll in the original film camera, Lumiere something...
Asked why he made films, he said it was a great medium in which to explore the life of the mind, "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive" being two brilliant examples. Both films are airtight, BTW, not willy-nilly like some folks think. Anyway, my mind doesn't live in tape land, and that's the problem as I see it.
How about you guys - do your inner visual thoughts look like video tape?

We can't judge David Lynch's film until we actually see it. Wasn't Industrial Symphony shot in video ? I read somewhere that the offcuts from Fire Walk With Me - well worth a revisit - will be released as DVD extras when they have been scored. There may be a petition to encourage this on the actress that played Laura Palmer's website.

i don't think FWWM bombed because it had scenes cut to get the run time down. it bombed because it was too dark for many people & they expected it to be the same as the TV series. personally i think it's one of the best films i've seen.

True, but I'm going to go out on a limb and predict it will be really great - exciting, emotional, another neat riddle.
I just think it would have looked better and had even more impact had he used film.
