I don't read Swedish, but Sven Nykvist was a great cinematographer whose development and promotion of S-16mm will be a great legacy he left to the world.

Rune Ericson came up with S16...

This is pretty sad. I just saw "Wild Strawberries" and his work was beautiful and spare. I thought he was around the same age as Bergman... I guess not.

There's a really nice documentary about him called Light Keeps Me Company. I believe he developed a disease late in life that was like Alzheimers sort of, but not exactly - it had something to do with spatial orientation. I do believe he was a bit older than Bergman, but not sure about that.

He is one of my favorite cinematographers and will be greatly missed.

I haven't seen any of his work, but I am definitely going to now. This is truly a great loss for the art.

I just finished reading his book, and I encourage you all to do so as well. It was very inspiring and interesting.

Since I live quite close to Sweden, I even nurtured the childish idea of meeting the man some day.

His work with Tarkovsky on Offret (The Sacrafice) was brilliant as well.

Nykvist was born 2 Dec 1922. Bergman was born 14 Jul 1918.

Actually "Wild Strawberries" was photographed by Gunnar Fischer with whom Bergman had work in a number of movies in the 50's. When Bergman decided to make "The Virgin Spring" in 1960, Gunnar Fischer was already working on another movie so he ended up choosing Sven Nykvist for the job. And what happened later was that Bergman was so impressed by his work that he then decided to ditch Fischer and use Nykvist in most of his subsequent movies. So that was the beginning of his successful duet with Nykvist .

Strange - but you're right. Having seen Offret I saw many similarities with Nykvist's cinematography there and assumed that since Wild Strawberries was Bergman that Nykvist was involved.

How right you are Evan. I have gotten those two mixed up in the past... I did like Sven's work. He will be missed by fans of great cinematography.

It stands to reason, if you read Tarkovski's book, you'll know he is way into Bergman.

Yes, but I think the opposite was more obvious... Tarkovsky seemed somewhat ambivalent even about Bergman IIRC.
