I just uploaded K-40 DS8 footage

Post by paulcotto »

Hello,

I just uploaded some K-40 DS8 shot with my Canon DS8. It's outdoor shots of my son Alex skating some ramps in Japan. I transfered it with my Elmo ST-1200 ETC Telecine projector to my Panasonis WV-F200CLE, 3 chip camera head, then into a ATI All-IN-Wonder PRO 8500 128. The DIVX AVI Codec was used for compression. The file is a little over 10 Megs. If you want to see more DS8 footage let me know and I will upload it. Here is the link>

Where are you getting the k40 dbl Super 8? Is it on 100' rolls?

Is this what's replacing K25?

Sorry,

I meant to address that. There is no more K-40 DS8 since Chambless in Georgia ran out a few years ago. They had some old frozen stock that they have long since run out of. I currently use K25 DS8 from International Film. I have an idea how to build a machine to MFG my own DS8 but I currently lack the recourse to peruse it beyond the design phase. It really would not be as hard as many think it would be with modern servomotors and optical encoders to precisely position 35mm film and use a punch and die made from tool steel or carbide to punch the super-8 perforations. If anyone has access to wire EDM equipment let me know.

DS8 Question

Post by ds21z »

How many film stocks are available and from whom? Pricing? Who does your processing? Pricing? Can't they re-perf 16mm stocks?. Trying to perf 35mm would seem a very expensive way to do it, unless you are getting two strips of DS8 for on 35mm strip. I am thinking about this format but not if the film is not available.

Also, I tried to view your AVI movie but can't as I don't have the right codec for it and when I tried to download the ATI codecs they won't install because I don't have an ATI card in my system. Know any tricks or tips so I can see your handiwork?? Anyone have an idea here?

Thanks,

Paul

Get the codec here,

http://www.divx.com/divx/

The films stocks available are

K-25 from international film (while it lasts)

Fomapan 100 asa B&W reversal (dirt cheap)

Khal film in B&W and 16 ASA color reversal (flavor of the month at Kahl Film)

Thats all I know about but in theory Kodak can make any other 16mm they want in DS8, but apparently they don't want to be bothered

I think the best bet is for a group of us to get together and get the new Ectachrome 100 reversal made into DS8.

In the mean time I will be stocking up on K-25

I added two more short clips. They are of my brothers Pete and Tim's old band (ON BASS AND GUITAR). The music is my brother tim solo that I recorded in a bar in Houston. I guess he will be internationally known now  The lights were halogen work lights which I color corrected in the NLE software I use. Here's the clips>

Right click and "save target as" to download them.

Cheers,

PS you can see the bottom half of me holding the camera n the 1st shot

I just went to Wintner-Kinochek's (sp?) site and they now have Kodachrome 40 Double Super 8 on 100' rolls. Guess I'll keep my Bolex after all.

I just looked and I only see the K-25 and the announcement that they have ordered the last available production run. Could you post a link to the K-40 product announcement?

Thanks,

My son just won first place in a local contest last week. The prize was a really nice skate board from a local shop. He sold it to upgrade his skates. He's an inline skater all the way

Hi Paul,
Is Kahl selling a new ASA 16 color reversal stock???

Or did you meant Kahl UT 18 Chrome ASA 50/18 DIN? :?

I think that the new Ektachrome 100D is so far more grainy than K-40 or K-25, but better than Ektachrome 125T, especially more resolving power and color saturation.

Carlos.
