Surf Film

Hey

Here's a link to a film I shot on my last trip to Fiji and New Zealand. Nothing too special, simple and slow paced but thats how the trip was.
The quality is not great but you'll get an idea of what its about. I know there are hairs/dust there are jump cuts etc... thats the way it is, I wasn't trying to make a super slick glossy surf film, more a raw collection of moving images.

Some nice shots there, especially the underwater footage. Did you use a Nautica or underwater housing? K40?

All shot on K40 using my Nizo 801 and Eumig Nautica. It was my first trip with the nautica and I was very impressed with it, obviously its great underwater but I found it also to be excellent above, especially in the harsh sunlight when on the boat. I was a little worried about the automatic exposure but I think the shots turned out far better with that than the 801, great exposure and a sharp picture.

Which film were you using and which camera?

Nizo 801 and Eumig nautica. All shot on K40. The shot you refer to with the spinaker up was shot with the nautica.

Good work. I felt like it could have been cut down a little more and at 5-6 minutes would have been fantastic. The underwater footage is very good, especially for K40. I should have taken a Nautica when I was diving in the Caymans..

....nice work. I was drawn right into it and stuck with it until the last credit. In fact it even made my heart race a bit looking at those waves. You captured the magic of being out there when the sets roll in...

on to the technical stuff: what was your method of telecine for this piece?

I think I agree with what you say Evan, it could well have been cut down to make a much shorter film. I think I just got two tracks I liked and decided that I'd work to that, not ideal and it definetely shows in the second half where I was running out of shots.
Other things that bother me are the section in Fiji where the camera is super shakey. I left that in only because it contains some of the best waves. I was at my zooms limit trying to stand in a small dingy and film - it was always a battle I was going to lose.

Norcal - I think the font was something like sp movie condensed? Its on a different computer so I can't be sure.

Steve - The telecine was just a cheap semi pro service aimed at people wanting to convert their old home movies. Again not ideal, but it did the job for now.

The whole project was always just an experiment really, giving me a chance to use my cameras and play on final cut.
