My latest (and best) telecine

Post by paulcotto »

I received a Sony 3CCD industrial camera in the mail 2 weeks ago and added it to my Elmo ST-1200HD ETC 24 fps telecine projector with the 45mm Sony macro lens, which by the way was made for this exact camera (just by luck). The camera is mounted up side down onto an X-Y macro slide attached to a custom build wood frame. I replaced the stock lamp socket with MR11 12 Volt 10 watt lamp and socket normally used for home accent lighting to get the brightness of the lamp to a level that the camera can handle easily. I am very happy with the first results so far so here is a clip. It's from the same reel of my brother’s old band for comparison with my older clips. The clip is in MPEG2 format>>>

If you cant play the clip download the free MPUI which plays almost any format video without windows media player>>

Here is some more K25 DS8 footage I shot 3 weeks ago. The film is of a pool party in my brother’s back yard. The great thing about this location is the 2 story house casts a shadow over the entire back yard after 1PM so you get "Magic Hour" all afternoon with no black shadows even in bright daylight. The light meter hovered around f2.

Awesome footage, excellent quality. Wow!

I just have one question, why is the clip so pink? I don't suppose the film is actually faded ;) so I wonder if it was 1. the lighting (when the scenes were shot) or 2. the white balance on your video camera was off while you telecined the film?

Probably the lighting, but it could be the difference in monitors we are using. I have a Dell LCD are you using a CRT or LCD monitor? I could correct it in virualdub easily.

That's pretty good Paul - have you done any diy transfers of 16mm?

I have all the equipment including a Eastman TV-12M6 telecine projector, optical singleplexer and a Panasonic 3CCD broadcast camera. I just don’t have the space needed to set it all up permanently. I also just scored this off eBay>>

Its a uncompressed SD recorder that has superior specs to Digital Betacam. The seller has one more up for sale for $500 But It Now and it lists for over $2300 USD.

Nice transfer Paul!

How much difference in quality compared to the old system with the Panasonic 3CCD camera head I remember that you worked with before? It is hard to tell on my 12" Powerbook.

That harddisk recorder is amazing, Digibeta quality without the high price.

Still working on my 3CCD telecine setup with a JVC C-mount camera...

The Panasonic has superior specs to the Sony but the Sony has RGB output which the Rosendahl Bonsaidrive hard disk recorder is able to record directly with just an adjustment to the onscreen menu. I am hoping it already has the SDI output installed which would allow me to transfer the digibeta quality SD to my PC uncompressed with a Decklink SDI card. The Panasonic camera was very heavy and could not be mounted up side down to correctly transfer film. The Sony should be just about perfect for my needs. I got it for $120 including shipping off eBay and it lists for about $800.

I removed the projector door because it just gets in the way.

Very impressive results! I was considering getting a macro slide to use for my 3CCD Telecine setup, is the one you're using similiar to the ones listed on this site?

I would choose the first one because it looks like it has more travel. Check eBay for a used one first before ordering. Here is one for half the price >>>

I just got an email from the seller of the BonsaiDrive hard disk recorder that says it has the SDI IO option is already installed. So basically the unit does everything a digibeta recorder does plus it has 10 uncompressed audio tracks and nonlinear access to all media clips with time code for $500.00. The original list price is $2300 for the recorder and $800 for the SDI option card bringing the total to $3100. There is one more up for sale if anyone wants it I would jump on it before it's gone.
