Double Super 8

Has anyone ever had this happen? I just received a roll of Double Super 8 K25 from Kodak processing and they didn't slit it!

hmmm,

On Dwayne's k-14 order form, it says "orders over 25ft will be returned unslit". Do you know if it went there or to the Kodak lab in Switzerland?

Thank you both. No I don't know where they sent it but I'll find out today when I call them.

Thanks for the info on the slitter. Yes it looks like a simple device. I can't imagine it would be a simple task to slit 100' of the stuff though.

Talked to Kodak processing in NJ today. It took several tries before I found someone that knew what Dbl Super 8 was. One guy told me they don't slit film anymore. I asked him how I could project it and he suggested I send it back and they'll make slides from it!?? Kinda scary. Finally someone told me to send it back with a note that says, "please slit". No wonder the world is going to digital.

Who sells it...in the US preferably. Who processes it? Is it destined to be phased out real soon? What are the costs associated? Has any one used the russian DS8 camera? Does their "slitter" work? Or is it a pain in the rear?

Where has all the old Dbl8 and Dbl Super 8 perfing equipment gone that must have been around a few years back.....the junkyard? Is there any way to use 16mm stock and then re-perf or adapt used 16mm projectors to use DS8 with 16mm perf? When I first heard of DS8 I was excited about it, thinking it provided a real pressure plate / gate and let you use all the 16mm film stock to boot,.....but now.......????

Does this no slitting also apply to R8? If so, Why the hell not? Does Kodak in Switzerland also not slit the 100 foot rolls?

Kodak just screwed up. I just got a roll of K-25 back from them slit and put on a 200' spool. I would send it to Martin Bumgarten for slitting because it will be treated well, lubed, and the proper amount of leader added. eMail him for a price at,

Are you saying that Kodak in Switzerland will slit 100 feet of double 8 but dwaynes and the other places in the U.S. will not?

Dwaynes equipment will only handle 25' rolls. Kodak can handle 100' rolls. Dwaynes will process 100' rolls and return them to you unslit.

The last word I got from them is that they do slit the film in New Jersey although it's processed in Switzerland and that they would slit it there if I send it back.

Yes, it usually comes slit and on 200 ft rolls. Never had a problem before. The boxes that it comes in say "16mm" on the side, so maybe someone was just confused and didn't notice the "Double Super 8" designation. I guess they'd really have an irate customer it they slit someone's 16mm by mistake.

I've built my own slitter in the past. Machined out of aluminum with a thin razor blade to do the slitting. I have recently seen a finely machined slitter made from turned rollers. Does a better job than most I have seen.

Kahl in Germany sells the russian ones. I bought mine from International Film, but I don't know if he still sells them.

Mr. Olexandr Kalynychenko in Ukraine sells very good LOMO slitters for 10 euros each, they are excelent and cheap and you can always adjust the razor easily.

His site is some posts above.

It is very easy to slit double8 film, i canÃ‚Â´t understand why some people still pay for slitting. When i started to film in double i just used a double8 reel with the film, with one pen on it, and two little super8 reels stuck together with another pen on it, i used to put the slitter in the middle and push one of the reels, the film just runs smoothly and it gets slitted easily.

I understand that many people might not want to have all this work, but part of the fun in filming in 8mm is this type of situations.
