cajole, convince, harrass, help others to use super8
look into possibly cutting and loading film in unavailable stocks
look into sync sound concepts and options for projection
Since someone said there's no efficiency without organisation, I'd say let's organize this into specialized departments:
1.) Motion Picture Production dept.
2.) Public Format Promotion/Advertizing dept.
3.) Stock (supply and 'cartridging') dept.
Btw it's a great thing that 'S8' can officially stand both for Super and Single, both have become endangered specieses now more dependent on independent enthusiasts with the discontinuing of K40 and RT25/RT200.
4.) Technological Research dept.

How does one start a club? I mean a club that meets in a room, watches a program for part of the meeting, show and tell members new works, have a short business meeting, organizes public showings then has coffee and cakes.
I used to attend the East Sub. Artists Group. Dues were $25 a year so I quit. That was primarily for a printed paper newsletter. Members were and are not computer connected.
They are a legal body. They have bylaws printed. They have a bank account. I don't know if they pay taxes or not??
Over in England there are lots of "film" clubs (most only shoot video nowadays). Clubs are not very popular here in the USA.
So, how does one start one of those clubs in the USA but all about Super 8mm film?
If enough clubs were formed, a society may come out of them all connecting online.
What are the legal things you need to do to start a club?
My local bank has on offer free checking accounts for businesses. Is one of those needed?
Pittsburgh has the Film Kitchen but no S8 Film Club (society).
BTW, I'm volunteering at least as an idea supplier and debater and partly one of the list keepers for depts. 2-5.
Motion Picture Production dept. will also take care of equipment handling education by which it differs from Public Format Promotion and Advertizing dept. by more going into details.
Some Stock dept. tasks:
What about acquiring more information on the North-Korean stock already in Kodapaks? Didn't Austrian MovieMaker (HollywoodShop.at) say he intends to import that stuff to the West?
Who is planning where to commercially care about supplying Single8 stock after Fuji will give in, and who will care about processing? We need to make a list.
Stock dept. will also keep and provide lists on which stocks are available from which independant manufacturers, which stock goes to which independent (specialized) lab, and maybe also lists of which stock is available from what independent vendors where. Keeping and maintaining price lists on stocks and processing (it's how much where?).
More depts.:
5.) Telecining and NLE dept.
Mainly listing infrastructure as for telecining, as well as educating people about the fact it can be had for little money even pretty much around the corner, educating on the difference between charlatans doing off-the-wall and those getting out what is really in the emulsion, educating about NLE, and maybe educating about DIY telecining. Telling people what's initially in the emulsion is not Telecining and NLE dept. as one might assume but Public Format Promotion and Advertizing dept.

OK, all good ideas. Ill start working on the website. Film stocks may be a good place to start. I dont have time for research but will take any and all info you can supply.
But first, lets clear off that webspace and narrow those logos down. Im partial to one of LC's but they're all good and fine with me.
I gotta run down the road to the BBQ shack and pick up some of that sweet pork bbq that south Georgia is famous for and then get back to work screening the porch.
One of my old pals just called me from some movie he's doing in Virginia about Noah's ark. They built a full scale model. He said its 450 feet long. They had just finished planking it and it started raining - no lie!!!!
Maybe its happening again. It's been raining in TN for 13 days straight.
Im in south Georgia right now though.

Onward and onward!!!
Okay, GK and Wittner are supplying/manufacturing Velvia 50D in S8 and Single8 for now, and will probably replace it with another Fuji stock as soon as it'll be gone. Frank processes it and also sells it.
As soon as Switzerland will be gone, Wittner will take care of all K40 left in Europe by sending it to Dwayne's for a fee.
The two main processing labs I know in Europe are Andec and Frank.
As soon as Fuji will have stopped about Single8, Frank will be the only one to process Single8 in Europe and Asia, and he's probably the most economical solution for Single8 supplying and processing for European residents yet. http://www.single8film.com/ will provide self-loading Single8 carts which might be useful especially in combination with cart-less DS8 stocks.
Frank processes pretty much any stock discontinued for 5 years or longer except Kodachrome.

where oh where do i begin! ill respond to the points given. hopefully somebody will find the information usefull.
i agree there is no efficiency without organisation. id like to see proof of otherwise but even then the exception only proves the rule.
i think the departments listed were really good. mabye a few points to describe what they each do. call me clueless but im not sure what the motion picture department specifically would do but once again fleshing them out with dot points will clarify.
starting a club:
from memory, for a club to be an official legal entity it must be an incorporated association. this means paying a fee to the government and filling out forms. this means it is a nonprofit organisation, however, it can still make money.
this club would ofcourse be a bit different. i think it would mainly be run over the net, voice chats in various forms, email, etc. those that are local to each other can ofcourse meet up and do stuff together.
fees to this club would probably go more to something like the design of reloadable carts than a newsletter. there would be a big problem for those not connected to the net, something to consider on how to handle.
incorporated associations do not pay taxes. they also cannot cut cheques to members if there is a profit. monies made by the club must be spent on club activities. the club can also pay peoples wages, own assets, etc if desired.
clubs didnt really take off in northamerica but they seemed to flourish in the rest of the colonies.
a club mission statement and its goals are clearly laid out in the documents when the papers for an incorproated association are lodged.
one club is probably enough in one location. branches can form planet-wide with the centre going back to where the head office is. if projects requiring funds need to go to a specific location they can be sent for that purpose.
i do not know what sort of banking deals are available with an incorporated association.
a list of sources and resources would be great and id say expected. as i mentioned earlier it would be great and VERY feasable that the society would be a provider for some of them to the rest of the world.
telecine would be great but seems difficult. perhaps the society can make a deal with one of the top places around town.
id still seriously consider seeing if the society could somehow be a part of this site. i dont mind a buck or whatever from each member to go to pay for this site to keep it up. that way all the members here can be kept abreast with what the society is doing and newcomers can see whats happening. just have a different enterance for society members. that would make for great exposure and marketing for the society. think about it.
i also dont think a logo is important until a society is formed! but if a logo is chosen soon id suggest something simple, easily reprintable and recognizable like most corporate logos. theres a reason they are desined the way they are at great expense...so that they are easily recognisable and easy to reprint. portraits and pictures are too complex.
one other interesting detail about perfing and loading film through the society is not only does it make it far cheaper than the businesses doing it but it also means that ds8 users can be supplied too becasue in order to make the s8 you have to make ds8 and slit it.
once again, food for thought. and dont think these plans are too grandiose. there are clubs local to cities that do far bigger things than this that are far more expensive in term of project cost.
members would also pay less than nonmembers...motivation for people to join.
Just clicked on the link and it looks so cool. Roger's logo on black. Really classy. I vote we settle on it and move on, with the sole reservation that it maybe too closely resmbles the Exclusive Film and Video logo -

YIKES! You're right. Who knew? Perhaps we should use one of the other entries. I just wanted to get the ball rolling in terms of people submitting logo ideas.

now i know what its like to be misquoted in the press!!!!!!!!!
i said i didn't think a logo was important until a society was formed. i only say this because ive seen lots people try and form clubs that are way busier with designing the logo and deciding whos going to be the boss instead of what the society is about and will do!
as for the logo, i vote for A or D because they look really good and are logos that can be reprinted on t shirts and stuff easily even if small in size.
the problem with I is the edges would have to be pretty thick white lines to stand out against a black background if small in size on a t shirt and the shadowing of the letters wouldnt reproduce too well.
I think that "H" is the best bet because it is simple and lends itself to T-shirt pockets, decals, etc. Even if you don't see the words "Super 8 Society" at the bottom, the design supports the concept without them. It works more as a logo than my design does. I vote "H".

It's easy to find out who I am but some of you, I just dont have a clue to whom Im talking to and I'd appreciate knowing. It does matter to me, even if it doesnt to some of you.

Like I said though, the design is pretty intuitive. Not to worry.

Whatever happened to logo #11? I don't think it looks that much like that one of exclusefilm.net at all. You'd only have to introduce some ambiguity some way or another so that it'll stand both for S8 and Single8.
Anyway, some definitions:
1.) Motion Picture Production dept.
Will organize shoots, screenings, and the like, pretty much like our current Projects and Events and Festivals sub-forums here (like, announce dates and ask for help/offer one-time and permanent jobs within project teams). Will furthermore educate about handling equipment, right up from the basics. It'll also be about getting the gear such as via eBay. Finally, it'll be about hawking 'round scripts, making up scripts, and educating and debating about visual and drama arts, just like our current Filmmaking sub-forum here.
2.) Public Format Promotion/Advertizing dept.
Like, get the gospel of the footage to the masses. Get well-shot and well-telecined stuff online and on TV, sell and advertize DVDs, pronouncing it is all small-gauge. Think-tank for actual ads, commercials, and campaigns concerning the format (remember the format consists of both footage and equipment, not only one of them, but don't just dwell on single models or stocks, always pronounce it's all part of the potential of the gauge itself).
3.) Stock (supply and 'cartridging') dept.
Lists and examples. Lists would be about what stocks are there and where to get them, examples would contain stills and footage in motion, both in traditional projection/print and after telecining to modern media. Since our format has come to be more dependent on busy enthusiasts not only using the stuff because K40 is gone and Fuji will be out of the game, this must also be about how to get new stocks in S8 and Single8 carts, both technically (splitting, perfing, loading into carts, maybe pre-striping as soon as we'll have found a way to do that via our Technological Research dept.) and by business relations and connections.
4.) Technological Research dept.
Stuff like making up new ways of live-sound (two-band, pre-striping, optical), that ever-ongoing idea of making up and more or less mass-manufacturing a new camera, producing new S8 carts (throwaway and reloadable), supplying reloadable Single8 carts or listing where to get them, resizing viewfinders to a more reasonable size, anything of hybriding S8 with digital that would have happened if video wouldn't have come along, like those live video previews from bigger gauges or getting a timecode on the original film, and more. A playground for Paul Cotto, Jaxshooter, and others.
5.) Telecining and NLE dept.
What it looks like on TV and on a computer screen, and how conveniently it can be edited, those are crucial, even pivotal factors for the survival of our format in the electronical and digital world of today. That's why especially basic knowledge about economical telecining availability most likely around the corner and the standard nature/look of different ways commercial houses do it must be taught. Educating about NLE-editing is also important but less so since there are lots of other places doing it as well, though there might be positive synergy effects if it's all in one place (that is, us), and we can deal about special film-origination issues in NLE, such as framerates and removing flaws from bad telecining or off-the-wall.
6.) Repair dept.
Offers fixing and refurbishing any cine-related gear and education about it, plus lists of fixing and refurbishing places and where to get certain spare parts. Shouldn't specialize in cams only but also into things like getting that humming bee out of projectors.
