Shooting film is what its all about and personally, Im in the promotion of super 8 films and film makers camp. Perhaps you should find someone else to discuss your agenda with. My answers will never satisfy you.ECNtoo wrote:im thinking that even a super high quality short, with great trailer, telecined at the best level on the best machine, made to be downloadable at the highest res possible from a website still wont be a promotion of super8 in of itself. but thats just my opinion.
i just dont understand the direction. im all for a society, but to me society means a group of people with a common goal. a goal that is somewhat well defines. there are people shooting film here all the time, all making shorts and potentially could make trailers. the people that would most likely se it have already been converted. i dont think me shooting film and making it available online will help promote the format. to idea of promoting super8 means doing something outside what is regularily done with it. to promote implies activly 'recruiting'. i guess i should have just said something along the lines of 'lets look at other groups and societies that are successful and do what hey do'. i dont want to piss anybody off, far from it, i just see promoting super8 as an excercise in marketing like anything else. generally products dont sell themselves. you have to activly seek out as many potential 'buyers' of a product or service as possible and then 'sell' these people on the reasons why they should make the switch from what they are currently using. i dont believe that super8 can sell itself. but i think ill quit while im behind on this issue.

Exactly. Look at the Recording Academy (NARAS), Ive been a member for 20 something years and the Motion Picture Academy.ECNtoo wrote: 'lets look at other groups and societies that are successful and do what hey do'.
These "societies" generally exist to promote the actual work of the members. This is my background and where I come from, what Ive seen work and be successful.
Your points are just as valid, Im sure, just not to me. What you seem to be advocating is an industry trade association. I would have no interest in this approach personally.

well, you dont have to be a trade association to have a club or society that produces things. many clubs/societies to restore and fly planes. to make bits for high altitude model rocketry. to construct and race cars.
what im saying is clubs and societies form to do many things. to promote work is great. how about to promote the format. to me the most effective things that would promote the format would be:
make work in super8
promote work in super8
cajole, convince, harrass, help others to use super8
look into possibly cutting and loading film in unavailable stocks
look into sync sound concepts and options for projection
many clubs and societies 'sell' services and products that help them afford to do the things that they do with a little profit margin. said products and services often also help promote what their society is into. even promoting the work of others could then just be considered to be the act of a marketing firm, but in this case its not.
id love to see a super8 society that wanted to look at doing those things listed. im sure theres more that i havent thought of ut its a good start. some things could be immediate, some long term, some just wishes that are dreams but should still be investigated. remember, the more versatile and available super8 is the more of an audience it will get. and it will take more than a couple of things to 'push' in order to really get the format up and running.
its up to us to make it go leaps and bounds.
