Is Dodcap dead?

Post by tmoceri »

I've had a WorkPrinter XP for about 3 years and I'm going to get back in the "game" after about 2 years of unuse (hey I got 3 kids!!! ;)

I was using Dodcap (ver 1.36) and decided to check the site for updates. Surely something was done to it in the last 2 years. Well the name has changed but it is the same ver updated back in 7/2004.

So is this sw dead? Is the author still developing it? If so to bad it fit the bill and I plan to keep trying to use it but thought I'd check here first.

Well, it looks like, at least on their site, that they changed the name to CineCap. Cinecap is availble up to version 1.40, but I have no idea when that was posted. If Cinecap is differernt that DodCap (which it shouldn't be, Dodcap's home page announced the change of name), then I have no idea whats happened. Here is where you can download 1.40.

I've been using Dodcap steadily for 2 years without upgrading. It's always worked just fine for my capture and pulldown, which is why I never bothered to upgrade. I fugure if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
100D and Vision 3 please

...and if you´d fix it anyway, the fear for the need for a new adjustment of the timing of the WP is huge. 8O

Upgrading to a newer version of CineCap will not change your timing on the WorkPrinter.

The original version was called "DodCap" but was changed to the name "CineCap" to reflect more of its functionality. One reason for the delay in the newer 1.40 is that Jeff and I are working together to add new features to the 1.40 that will result in several different types of software, depending on whether you have the WorkPrinter, Sniper or Sniper-Pro. Hardware upgrades have meant changes in the software, as well. Also, MicroSoft forced an unexpected change in support for programmers using their older authoring software that the 1.36, 1.37, etc had been written in. Jeff was well into the new 1.40 when that happened. Since the previous software seemed to be working fine, Jeff decided to start over and use the newer MicroSoft authoring software for 1.40 and above, rather than generate a new versions of the older software, which would have been silly. And, finally, we have been working in tandem to explore HDV applications. All this takes a bit of time. And as if that wasn't already a full plate, Jeff has been shouldering a lot of responsibility dealing with his father, who has been in and out of the hospital quite a lot over the last year.

CineCap is alive and kicking. Not only will there soon be newer versions with more features, but there will be sound synch applications and a new, hi-resoution slide capture software to complete the line-up for film and picture archivists. So stay tuned! :)

Thanks for the reply... good news that it is alive!

First off I'm 15 years into Software development and the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is a running joke in our industry. If you don't change it MS will and it will break :)

Dod/Cinecap is a great piece of SW that does what it says for a reasonable price. I am looking forward to the next update.

BTW Jeff, it is amazing what a 1 or 2 line update to a web page can accomplish is the way of keeping people interested.

Dodcap/CineCap

Tom,

Indeed...point taken. I am out of state right now on a business trip (yes, I do have another job besides maintaining Dodcap/CineCap) but when I get back in town I will go ahead and make my updated website available as http://www.alternaware.com.

I am still maintaining the software and do plan to release future versions even after 1.40. However, I utterly despise working on my website (I would much rather work on the software) but I can see that I definitely need to get the site updated.

Sorry for the confusion.

Roger and Jeff: Since there are several of us who are ready to pounce on your updates, upgrades and improvements, (HDV!!! I'm dying trying to cope with an SD mix!) maybe consider letting us submit our email addresses so you can send out any announcements. Then we can go about our daily lives without fear of missing something if we don't regularly check in here or with your individual sites.

A real useful update would be a life histogram!
And maybe some real time color/brightness/contrast tweaking.

But I must say it's the only prog that recognises my machine cam without any problem. Most other capture devices are only recognising cams who are using standard DV protocol.
