I only came to this thread today....and we wonder why John sometimes gets impatient with the people who populate this forum...
The comment he made might be taken as cheeky, but it is 100% true...was not insulting and certainly not racist.

This is correct - it is not really a "student" discount, more of a "I'm a small time filmaker who is trying to output a project on a budget" discountmattias wrote:kodak gives discount to everyone who needs it and who has something to offer in return, so does fuji. call them and explain your situation instead of sitting here complaining about policies you know nothing about.
(that's kodak sweden and fuji netherlands. i can't comment on other branches but my guess is it's the same)

Julie at Fuji in London is very helpful. She always charges me £15+vat

[edit] What makes you think you have some sort of god-given right to get film for 30% less than the rest of us?PHILIE-T wrote:first off. i dont give a fuck about kodak or Fuji film. i just want some film.
Film is expensive, but at least be honest about whether you qualify for a discount -- lying to Kodak and Fuji doesn't do the rest of us "old guys" any good, and no doubt we end up having to pay higher prices to make up for it.
Try honesty. It works.

Film cooperatives can be cheap to join and also often have discount arrangements with Fuji, Kodak and other companies too - for example this one:

Man, sometimes I wonder how people over here are so patient with you. Being as blunt as you are, I'm surprised at the number of friendly replies you get.PHILIE-T wrote:first off. i dont give a fuck about kodak or Fuji film. i just want some film. if a man in a shed in a tree made film then i would buy his... such as the nature of the world we live in. we have no choice. Anyway, I'm probably in the same situation as you are. I'm trying to complete my 16mm short film this year, which surely isn't easy being 21, not a student and not making a lot of money. But I can't seem to understand why you want to use film. If you don't care about Kodak or Fuji, go shoot video. Most of us have accepted that film is an expensive niche product and even embrace the fact that it forces you to be more creative and selective.
I think you should only use film if you're serious about it. I mean, a large part of your audience probably won't even care about what format you shot your movie on.
Seeing how you bash Kodak and Fuji here, only proves to me that you haven't even tried to communicate with them. Part of making a film on a budget is about talking to people and companies. The film I'm making has no intention (and probably not a chance) of being profitable, but yet Kodak has given me a very generous discount (even more than the student discount) on their entire product range, because I talked to them and told them why I prefer the use of film over a digital format.
Remember list prices are aimed at the professional market and both Fuji and Kodak like to help out starting filmmakers (Kodak Motion Picture Holland is even lending out A-minima's to starting filmmakers like us!).
Please be a bit more positive over here and show some love for celluloid

Good luck,
René.

Re: Student Discounts
Mr Pytlak:
Maybe I didn't explained myself clear, so I will try once again. I wasn't discussing about big companies policies. As I said, they have the right to stablish them.
What I was addressing was this statement:

I felt insulted because I understood as "the only way to be a real student is to spend 30,000dolars a year in a filmmaking school". I still think this is insulting, but I have 14 Kodak super 8 cartridges and I want to shoot them as soon as posible. So, if you don't take your statement back, it's ok. Maybe it was just a joke, but in that case you are right and we both have to improve our "choice of words".John_Pytlak wrote:You could actually go to filmmaking school and be a real film student.![]()

Fernando, bajá un cambio...
Don´t take Kodak or Fuji´s policies concerning "Studient Discounts" as "offensive". Remember that If you want a "Bus discount" for students, first to all you MUST to be student. That´s it.
I think that the point is the lack of a right policy in Our country concerning filmmaking and you know what I mean.
_People (specially big film labs) don´t give a shit for Super 8 format here. It´s a fact.
_That´s why we need to send S8 negative film to another country for processing.
_The "entusiasm" for Super 8 filmmaking was decreasing since we felt in the Big Hole in december, 2001. And DV is by far cheaper.
_There´s no policy for discounts to import film by yourself. (You must to pay 50% of the invoice to Mr. Taxman !!).
Just look Brazil and see the difference.

Carlos.

I put a "John Pytlak wrote:Sure you can become a professional filmmaker without going to film school. But you are not defined as a "student" eligible for the student discount.
But saying that I made a "racist" statement is truly insulting, and I deserve an apology. Gracias.

Mr. Pytlak:
So, it was a joke. Maybe I've lost my sense of humor. Nevertheless, I still don't like it, not even as a joke. Anyway, my apologies, I didn't mean to be insulting per ser to get anything cheaper or for free.
Please, read carefully my first post. I am not supporting any kind of cheating. Like I said many times before, I pay for may cartridges. I agreed with philie-t ONLY in his post previous to mine, when he described the "30grand education", that's all.
Now that it's clear, at least to me, let's film!
De nada,
Morales
