Call me crazy...
After transfering a bunch of old home movies to DVD and watching them on the DVD player it just seemed really strange not to have any projector noise. So I recorded a 5 minute loop of projector noise and added it as a track on the DVD......Am I crazy?

If it's only you watching it, then yes, it's either nostalgia or nutty. If it's others, it's the media and they either with drift into your nostalgia bliss or wonder what's wrong with your video or possibly think you are nutty.
I get fruty-nutty watching 8mm films with projector racket on my mobile phone by myself. But recently, while shopping in the high street, I met friends who were deligted to watch their 4 year old on my phone cam screen w/ the projector racket track. I included Victor's commentary recorded live during telecine, with our budgie pair chattering full throttle. My birds think the projector's a tree full of other budgies.

I was ecstatic when I found that my “new†Eumig 607D had almost the same sound as my mums old Eumig 501. After all the 501 was the one we used to watch films when I was a kid.
The hum from the sound projectors I find annoying. More Eumig noise I say, but it is not the same noise recorded.

Not so crazy, but it isn't the same thing: it's like the difference between an artist paint and the pic of that paintjohnnhud wrote:Am I crazy?

On video I'd also miss cigarette smoke in the projector light cone

Yes, but I also notice they are adding flickering, extreme grain etc.Angus wrote:Have you noticed, when they show old home movie footage on TV (or fake it)...prgramme makers often artificially add projector noise into the mix...
They make it look like very old film (1920's).
Many people do not know how good old film can be.

When TV production companies fake home movies they often do make them look deliberately bad...worse than *anything* I've seen on 8mm...and usually they mimick poor video transfer rather than any limitations/characteristics of the film itself.
But they do add a projector whirring away to the soundtrack too.
When i transfer films I don't add any soundtrack at all...but I suppose a projector whirring wouldn't be bad...

JH, I liked your idea so much that Ive borrowed it and added a twist of my own to it..... the sound of the film "flapping off" the reel at the end...johnnhud wrote:......Am I crazy?
What do you think?? Four or three flaps???
