John, If you ever have the time, would it be possible to compare the grain curves of 100D and 160T?
100D and Vision 3 please

I'd like to, but unfortunately, the folks in the professional still film group still only publish the single RMS number for E160T, unlike Entertainment Imaging (professional motion picture), which publishes full curve data. Here is the curve for the E100D 5285, which shows very low granularity, especially in the lighter areas of the scene:

John, I'm surprised. How big is Kodak's budget in comparison to the budget of Fachverlag Schiele & Schön? What about profits?

And I'm surprised and disappointed with those who are so critical of the Kodak people that tried to help customers.

With a small company, ONE person usually makes the decisions, so there is no good excuse for miscommunication. With a large company, dozens of people may have a role in the decision making process, so asking a Kodak lab technician or salesperson for preliminary information will sometimes be somewhat different than the final decision made at higher levels of management.

In this case, the preliminary information was only a few weeks different than the final decision of August 1, yet the Kodak people that tried to help customers with preliminary information are being criticized for "bad public relations".

It is certainly understandable that most of us grieve for the loss of K40, but let's behave well, ok? :)
John is here to help with all things filmy, and he certainly isn't the one behind the decisions to kill anything nor is he responsible for other problems a large corporation has.

I, for one, certainly appreciate your presence and help here John, as most certainly do many others too. Thank you :)

All John is trying to point out is that things don't always go as anticipated. And I'm happy that he took to time to let us know about the August deadline as soon as he found out. :)

I didn't question any of that.

Hi John,
I really don't think that you can make it that simple. Filmers who are planning their holidays and want to make a last film project with K40 will and cannot write to the US CEO to get to know when processing stops. They ask those people of KODAK in their country that are RESPONSIBLE for those topics. And when the CUSTOMER SERVICE of the lab in Switzerland writes everybody that processing will stop end of September this is something you have to rely on. I am a little bit surprised that this implicitness needs any discussion.

This is true John. It's not exactly a matter "of few weeks". You probably know that most K40s are being shot during summertime. K40 loves the sun. For example, I shot 25 carts last summer (July-August) and another 25 the rest of the year. I bet this is the case for most K40 lovers. It wouldn't be a problem if it was an October-November matter but this is really different...

You know....I expect the people who work in the Swiss lab are just as surprised about the August 1 date as we are...

I'm still wondering why Agfa publicised that they were required by EU law to honour process-paid films until six months after the last such film expired, and Kodak apparently are happy to ignore this.

Must get my contacts within EU committees (yes, i have some) to dredge up the relevant legislation...but EU law is such a complete mess and it won't be a directive on "film processing" but something more obscure that happens to impact on process-paid cine films...
The government says that by 2010 30% of us will be fat....I am merely a trendsetter :)

If I don't mix up facts, the "Fachverlag Schiele & Schön" is making profits while Kodak doesn't. ;)

... I wouldn't complain if I only had 6-8 cartridges in my storage as usual. But I do have 30 cartridges at the moment :(

I was just upset with accusing good Kodak people who were just trying to provide the best information they knew at the time as having "bad public relations". As the person at the Kodak lab in Switzerland implied, the date had been "postponed" from earlier, but just had not yet been set.
