I've got a 2008 that I've had for quite some time, and I've always wondered about something - There's a little pull switch on the top of the camera, but I have no idea what it does. Anyone have any clue?
Also, is it difficult/expensive to replace the in camera filter? or is it one of those situations where its just easier to buy a screw on filter?

I think you mean the variable shatter lever, with this you adjust the variable shutter.

If it works like the lever on my 4008 ZM II, and I think it does, you can move it forward to fade out at the end of a shot or start at the closed position and ease it back to fade in at the beginning of a shot. To get a smooth fade of about two to four seconds, I find it helps to operate the lever with my thumb and drag the thumb a bit on the camera body.
You can also pull it out at the half closed position to reduce exposure by one stop, if you want to shoot at a wider lens aperture.
On most of the 4008's (except the earliest ones) you can also do lap dissolves, but I don't think that's possible on the 2008.
