I need music without copyright restrictions

I'm submitting a film for a competition and the entires will be screened before a public audience. My main obstacle is the fact that I need music for this film and copyright is proving to be a really big headache. Does anyone know of any particular websites that have downloadable music that can be used freely for public film screenings without any copyright hassles?

By the way, I'm broke so I would prefer websites where I don't have to pay for the use of songs.

I have quite a bit of copyright free library music. What kind are you looking for? What length? Are just needing one song or a series of instrumental pieces? In the end, it may very well be easier for you to buy a small music library, though most seem to be commercial in nature.

If you want to make an impression on this competion donÃ‚Â´t use copyright free stuff. Usually itÃ‚Â´s just plain bad.
But, having said that, if I remember correctly Jukkasil put a lot of his music out there withou copyright restrictions. ItÃ‚Â´s really good what he does.
I have a lot of music on my website but itÃ‚Â´s copyright restricted. However, if you ask me kindly I may allow you to use what you need.

You can make your own music with a program called Acid music. It supplies you with little bits of music that loop to become longer. A really cheap and now dead video editing program was called Studio 400 and it did the same thing. It will only run on a old PC with a low number of direct X; when I upgraded to a newer version of X is stopped working and I never got it back. The first Win 98 new install should play it.

Roger and Mathis, thankyou for your offers. I really need just one song for the film. Duration would be two and a half minutes. The music would have to be instrumental though as for choice of style of music, I can be a little flexible. The film consists mainly of time lapse sequences of nature and circus-type performers. Classical / orchestra music would be fine and also electronic (though not rock n roll or heavy metal obviously.) I'm open to suggestion for others musical styles which might be appropriate.

Archive.org is a good option. You could just go without music ;) I usually score my own projects.

Best bet is either to find a friendly musician, or better still have no music + make your own sound design/noise instead....

More useful suggestion: find some music that's been licenced under Creative Commons for free use ,.. there are various types of licence, some require that you credit the person, others that you make your work freely distributable in the same way, others you can do whatever you like with the music....

Sonnyboo's website contains some impressive original music. Initially I didn't know what to expect but I was wrapped when I downloaded the first song. I am closer to my song of choice now but I can't spend too much time deciding as the deadline for the film is very near.

For the record there's no such thing as (contemporary) music without copyright restrictions. What you need is a license to use it (make sure for what is explicitly stated). The copyright holder is still the copyright holder. Might seem like splitting hairs but it's actually quite relevant. As for a solution to the original request i second the vote for loops composing. I use garageband. /matt

Of course you could use Sonnyboo's or anybody else's free music, but then everybody at the festival will be saying, "hey that flick used Sonnyboo's music! Wasn't that great?" and remember the last 3 films that used the same free music, forgetting about your film entirely.

Reminds me of the mid 80's when I was enamored of the Yamaha DX-7 synth. I had been using it for about 6 months and loved the neat factory loaded sound patches, until I began hearing other people's music that sounded like cheap imitations of my work. Turns out they had discovered "my" patches and were crass enough to use them too! The nerve of some people...

Hi Patrick, check out Creativecommons.org Lots of alternatives to full copyright here. May well be that you find the idea of sharing your work and being able to share others attractive....

Otherwise my girlfriend has some self produced electronica with vocals that might be of use if you'd like to hear it? She said she'd be happy to donate / collaborate. PM me.

downloads at are avail 0.99 n registring required i believe is so my guess is that it becomes fully legal from that?

garageband is a great tool and actually if you have office x installed there is a "billion" of all sorts of wav, aif and midifiles there many good for looping. since license is paid for the x the files should be freely available for any use.
