16mm handwind cameras that timelapse [??]

Post by steve hyde »

...In the world of spring powered clockwork cameras - which ones can perform timelapses? Are there any that can do this?

a c -mount 16mm would be ideal for what I'm up to. (It is for making timelapses in remote mountain ranges.)

Thanks in advance.

...thanks Evan. Are the intervelometers easy to come by? Do they work with camera's other than Bolex? Is there an intervelometer for a Filmo DR?

Not cheap, though - I'd probably prefer a Super 8 camera like a Nizo that already has the function. Easier to carry up a mountain also.

It has been....other places, but we don't have any pictures.
No, it's not cheap! But why bring a cheap intervalometer to the top of a mountain?

As far as the Filmo goes, any Filmo intervalometer would have to be motorized, so it wouldn't be as light and compact as the TimeFlow units (available for Bolex, Beaulieu, Scoopic, K-3 and Kinoflex).

Why would the Filmo intervalometer have to be motorized?

There is no single-frame release button on a stock Filmo. You have to drive it thru the 20:1 drive shaft (twenty exposures per revolution of the shaft). Turn 1/40th of a revolution to open the shutter, then turn 1/40th of a revoluton to close the shutter. Pause and repeat.

Ends up looking like this

The really nifty feature of the Bolex is that not only does it have a single-frame release, but you can also control the shutter speed (exposure time) via the single-frame release. No other spring-wind camera has that capability. It allows for a full-featured time-lapse package using the light-weight and portable TIV.

Have have done several timelapses with my pulsAR timelapse device and my B&H 240T. This camera accepts a standard cable release.
Works great.

Tobin Cinema Systems also has a Bolex Time Lapse Motor which is also a motor so it doesn't need to be wound and can shoot a minute straight (or more with magazine). About $495 retail.

I had a Filmo with a factory installed single frame release. It was installed on the front of the camera above the lens mount. I gave it to one of the members of this board named Frea about 2 years ago.

Heh heh! Here I am!

It's funny I was just thinking that the postings on filmshooting seem quite nice today, it's more like the good old days! Nice to see you around again Paul!

The trouble with the single frame modification that comes with the filmo from the factory is that it is a weird little button on the top of the camera and there is no way of attaching any kind of cable release from what I can see. It also seems to jam sometimes. It's a really, really weird upgrade, but it's nice to have it there I guess. Shortly after getting the filmo (which cost a small fortune in shipping) I got a 240EE for some really silly price (£5 or something) from an e-bayer seller in a nearby village (why is life always like that!) This has a much better single frame setup with a little lever that you push in one direction for single frame and in the opposite one for normal running.

The local morrisons had the toilet freshner timers on sale, so I bought one the other day. I figured it might improve my life one way or another. I'm hoping to connect it to the 240EE. I don't think it would be possible for it to operate the filmo sadly. Bizzarely, the timings on that thing here in England are slightly different. I thought for a second that it might be 50hz vs 60hz issue and then I remembered the AA batteries. *shrug* Maybe they think americans make more smells, or maybe they figure they have bigger bathrooms.

Of course the big problem with the 240EE is no interchangable lenses, having said that it's been about 2 years as Paul has said, and so far I have largely failed in my quest for lenses for my filmo. I have managed to aquire a 6 inch lens! (great for shooting the enemy far away), a couple of wide angle lenses that my filmo can't handle anyway (the viewfinder goes down as low as 25mm) and bizzarely another 25mm lens (I already have one but this is a cooke F1.4, and nobody seemed to want it!) ;)

I got so frustrated at one point that I was chasing a eclair NPR, for this reason and for the fact that it would take 400foot loads which my freezer is full of. That didn't have a happy ending either as the seller managed to completely screw up the deal. Over christmas I was talking as far as going all the way to Finland to collect the thing but eventually I gave up in a fit of depression.

I'm just going to have to get used to re-spooling I guess, but sooner or later I'm going to score some lenses, I know I am! :)

...and failing that I've now seen Bottle Rocket and a film that Christoph showed me secretly, both of which were made with just one lens of one focal length! So maybe I will even do without those extra lenses!

For the moment I have the general K40 panic to deal with of course, as I have a little stash to shoot.

Anyway, I'm curious about the 240T, are you telling me it has support for a cable release? The EE just has a funny lever, but I'm sure I could make a cable push it or even just the air freshener device!

love

Thanks again for the filmo Paul!!! It's such a beautiful thing. I'm definitely going to have my picture taken with it soon! It is my panavision! :)

There are few people in my life that have ever really tried to help me. I never forget the things they have done. Well can't really explain what I mean, but it meant a lot to me.

Anyway, I'm being too soppy now, back to cameras and stuff! ;)

love
