What?! More than a handful of clockwork Bolex H-16s have made the trip to Antarctica because they don't have batteries that freeze. I agree with the sentiment that there a lube problem if yours can't handly "slightly freezing" weather.studiocarter wrote:Bolex camera jam in cold weather. I did that while out in only or almost slightly freezing weather after 15 min or half an hour it froze up. After a warm it was ok. I also read about it just a few days ago in the assigned reading for a film production class I'm in.
Wanted knowledge about 16mm cameras.

My teacher said to tread softly.
The tech in the out of house equipment window said, "It doesn't like the cold."
Another student in the class shot all day out in the snow and his camera worked fine. He didn't have #8, which hadn't been used since last November. Today I have #7, which hasn't been used since last November, nuts.
Indoor work goes on.

I don't know about the cold weather problems so much as I'm a Florida man,as we say down here,"I'm fixing to find out fairly soon though" as I'm married to a Canadian and we'll end up there eventually.
I'm not so sure if the problems you're speaking of aren't more moisture related than cold related.I was shooting a football game once at a high school in Fernandina Beach (just north of Jacksonville,Fl.).It wasn't cold but the humidity was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The moisture caused the film to swell slightly in the camera and it jammed up and would not run.
By the way,on that day none of the video gear people had including the local TV stations' ENG rigs would run either. That was back in 1980,old 3/4 inch decks. They still have those problems today, some things never change in spite of technological advancement.
