police on super 8

police on super 8
I caught a story from sundance that the drummer stewart copeland from the band Police shot tour footage on super 8. it has now been relased into a feature.
Their era was when super 8 was at its height, and video was still so cumbersome it was less practical.
Genesis used single 8 in the video for "Invisible Touch" in 1986...but that was just fooling around with a camera during the video shoot and some footage used as inserts.
I'd suspect a number of bands from the 70's and 80's would have super 8 footage...something sticks in my mind that one member of the Police is a camera nut so maybe that explains the extensive footage.

The government says that by 2010 30% of us will be fat....I am merely a trendsetter

Joy Division and Sex Pistols come to mind. Thats why I love shooting live music, S8 is the perfect aesthetic for it. But now with the 7218, things have jump skipped from where they left off in that era.I'd suspect a number of bands from the 70's and 80's would have super 8 footage...

Just the other day I saw the clip for da de de de da do do do (or whatever it is) and all through the clip you see Copeland with (what I think is) a Canon 1014 - you even see him loading it at one stage - looks very cool -- there's probably some Police site on the net where you can see the clip or stills from it
- I guess big rock stars had the money and inclination to shoot lots and lots of Super 8 - when other didn't

I have the Police video compilation on dvd and in one of the vids a Sankyo 620 XL Supertronic can be seen...Copland must have lots of super 8 cameras.
Other favorites in my collection includes Roy Orbison's Black or White Night where super 8 tri-x was used for the cutaways, think the camera was a Beaulieu.

Yes indeed, awesome vintage footage that Mr. Copeland has compiled of the formative years of the Police! I was able to get a sneak peak glimpse of some of the rough cuts of his docu from the editor who cut his movie, Brit Marling of Abandon in L.A. They did a great job on it, and the sound quality was exceptional, which they had telecined at Spectra film & video.
Hope it gets picked up by a distributor and they show in theatres. But if not I'm sure it'll at least make it to DVD.

Danger Will Robinson!
I've heard from a good source that Spectra bought Stewart Copeland's Sankyo 620XL Supertronic from him and they're now selling it on their website. So I went online and checked http://www.spectrafilmandvideo.com/Cameras.html and sure enough they have that same camera model for sale. So that might actually be Stewart's orginal camera. I mean if they transferred all of his super 8 footage for him then they probably also bought his camera from him too. Why else would they be selling it for $625.00!

Are they of this planet? I paid $405 for my 1014XLS (which came with a useless-to-me Goko editor) and felt I was taken to the cleaners.

... like I said, hunk of junk! £11 plus postage (£5) for the accessories...
If the microphone works, could use the monitor line out to feed a recordable walkman... or mini disk... I suppose. Anyway with the mic came a lens hood, chest pod, remotes and light bracket, which makes it usefull as well as collectable... I have a few outdated K40 Sound Cartridges. Maybe I'll record a Police tribute band concert, or maybe Fleetwood Bac.

I saw some clips of the Police doc. It looked quite good considering it was grainy ektachrome from the 70's. Colors were nicely restored.
Cameras Spectra sells are rebuilds that are film tested and have a warranty - which explains why their cameras are not in the same price bracket as unserviced, untested ebay cameras. I know we all get a good ebay deal once in a while. But, do not forget to add up the ebay rip-offs that go with that good deal.
I myself have bought 3 Canon 1014XLS cameras on ebay for $400 - 450.00 each. One of them arrived with the old batteries encrusted into the handle and circuit board fried. I went though hell trying to return this one because the seller insisted that I broke his camera. Another arrived with fogged viewfinder, stuck on one speed and soft picture. The seller would not take it back. The third arrived average condition with fogged viewfinder, but still works! Finally got myself a so so 1014 for about $1000.00 with all the shipping fees, film tests and hassles. A true ebay bargain!
In the end, I found myself wishing I had bought a solid rebuilt from a reputable source - with warranty. This I will do when my wimpy 1014 from ebay finally gives out for good.

I suppose it wouldn't be that hard to prove him wrong, considering the time batteries need to leak, especially as excessively as found in ancient eBay items such as those we're interested in, what time said leakage needs to encrust like that, and how intensively the item has caught oxydation due to this process over time.DrkAngl wrote:One of them arrived with the old batteries encrusted into the handle and circuit board fried.
