Widest Angle lens for Bolex H16?

Post by Arislan »

I intend to shoot a miniature set composited with real people. This means I need to use the widest angle lens possible in sunlight. I have an 8mm lens, is there an even wider one?

Can't find those on eBay. By the way, my Bolex has a screw mount of sorts. I always thought they had a C mount but that's not what that is, is it?

If it was I'd get this:

I don't know of any H16's that aren't (technically-speaking) c-mount. The really old ones have the long-thread version of that mount, so you'll see "c-mount" lenses with deep threads that won't fit a newer c-mount camera.

Nigel states above the 2 widest c-mount primes I'm familiar with. I have seen both on ebay from time to time. You won't find the kinoptik cheap, ever. Probably not the Angenieux either, but I believe it's a bit more common.

If you're searching ebay for these, make sure and check the "worldwide" option.

What mount is this?

Image

That is the zoom lens I took from my Auricon, was hoping to use on my Bolex with some sort of adapter...but I have no idea what mount that is.

thats actually the back of the lens. the auricons seemed to be designed to take the regular mount. i have one. mine has a cover that converts that lens to c mount

I just picked up a Rx 1 for a steal last week. Anyone knows if this lens would fit?

I own the Century(?) Super Cinetar 3.5mm and 5.7mm C-mount lenses. They are -really- wide in 16mm, just about fisheye. I believe the 3.5mm lens has about a 120 degree frame angle. Don't know how they work on a Beaulieu, haven't tried yet.

3.5!?!

I guess that's for filming the back of one's own head?

Is the 3.5mm lens going to fill the 16mm frame without vignetting? The Kinoptic has an enormous front element (looks like 5-6" across). I've seen some very wide angle CCTV lenses in C-mount but I don't think they will cover the frame.

But won't that 3.5mm give the image a round effect? Like a real fish eye? If not then it is perfect for what I want.

Yeah the 3.5 will give a "Bubble/Fish eye" look. Anything wide will. You can see distortion even at 9.5mm.

Maybe I can get away with 10mm then. I have no intention of making the composite scene look unnatural. The idea is to have the miniature in the foreground and the people however many feet behind it.
