Is Jorma Kaukonen still alive?

Haven't thought about him for a while but thought I heard he had passed on.

Hope not, he was a cool guy.

Well, I can't be sure, but somebody with his name pasted a blog onto his web site today:

http://www.jormakaukonen.com/

He started Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and is on the road today. That's longevity.

PS I prefer Fountain of Salmacis...
"Bigger than jesus"...well, the giant Hogweed is bigger still, and will kill us with it's hogweed hairs! ~:?)

Salmacis is a great tune... about the birth of Hermaphroditus!

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/g/genesis/58898.html

Then they had songs about urban sprawl/greedy land developers, T.S. Elliot poems, and other themes not dealt with by *any* other bands. Plus a great sense of humour.

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/g/genesis/58843.html

When we were in highschool, Genesis provided relief from a plethora of songs about the singers' genitals, or how cute she is, blah blah blah...the music/lyrics took inspiration from more diverse sources than standard rock bands, no matter how "big". Beatles and Stones were simply same old same old, not to mention one *couldn't get away from them*. Of course the Beatles influenced Genesis, but there isn't any music that sprang from nowhere...so who really cares?

Now that I've grown up, I pretty much like everything, and realise the futility of "best" wrt art in any form. Thanks for asking. ~:?)

depends... if you know the exact definition of rock´n roll or not.. do you?

what are the lyrics of today, "drop dead beatiful" or more directly sex related.

whazza differenze?

if u want storytelling - just grab a book - turn on some classic music n dump down in a chair. youve got it.
The man in the crowd with the multicoloured mirrors
On his hobnail boots
Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy
Working overtime
A soap impression of his wife which he ate
And donated to the Nation Trust.
isnt exactly abt girls love n n n ?

there are dozens x 24

s8hoot

ADD: sample not too many songs after 64-65 were love stories.
I read the news today oh, boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh and
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before,
Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of lords.

I saw a film today oh, boy
The english army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had a look
Having read the book,
I’d love to turn you on...

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Ah

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all,
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the albert hall.
I’d love to turn you on...

Seriously, I think it was largely a reaction to having Elvis, the Stones, the Beatles etc., shoved down our throats at every turn. Alright already. So we found something that felt like it was more "ours". Part of defining who we were/were not, at that age. We were budding musicians very tired of 1/4/5 - intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/middle 8/ verse/chorus/chorus/outro...ad infinitum. "Baby I love you!"
OTOH, Zeppelin blows them all away for me still. *Nobody* had their production, especially wrt the drums (I'm a drummer).

The best thing about any band is that they aren't the other band - diversity!
And Genesis was nothing if not...different. 3 out of 5 of them sat down while playing, and they had zero fashion sense. Very refreshing for the times.

Now I appreciate it all, and try to avoid the futile endeavor of trying to convince people that Chevy is better than Ford...though they are. ~:?D

Brian Bennet! His legendary drum solo on 'Little B' stood model for about every drumsolo after him. Actualy, The Shadows where the prototype of almost every pop group after them.

The basic setup: solo-rythm-bass guitar and drums.

nope - the expression originates from black americans back in the 50s and is a pseudo for heavy/groovy f**kin´which ofcourse includes females - thus the love bit tied together.

besides - the beatles and probably all other groups/artists of the early days were more intrested in the "birds" in the audience than the music itself - naturally - but the music (fukn howl n drive [;lennon]) was the "tool" to get there.

one reason why mcny moved onto the the front where the audience was approx: "although i was *forced* to play the bass when Stu quit i didnt want to be the typical fat ugly bass player lurking behind the band - i wanted to be right up where the birds were".

todays 1st little betales historic lesson.

Status Quo.

I've read they are a one hit wonder in the USA (Pictures of Matchstick Men)...whereas they've had about 53 hits in the UK!

Quo is an under estimated band.
3 chords, yes, but played with very good timing.

I'm still looking for the album "Piledriver", hard to find!

I'm glad to say the same (though who's Stax/Atlantic soul?) about myself, even though it all took part decades before my birth. ;)

Anyway, why haven't we mentioned The Who yet? Or Manfred Mann's Earth Band explicitly (btw, anyone heard of that recent impertinence and irreverence For you by The Disco Boys yet?), apart from Manfred's 60s soft pop days one decade earlier?

Booker T and the MG's where the house musicians on all these fine records.

Another fine band: Alan Parsons Project, with Colin Bluntstone (Zombies) very often as lead singer.

Synchronicity: I hear Otis Redding on my radio right now :D
