Ah, Booster, the sixties....

War was over, economy was running fine, people where happy.
Industrial air was already very polluted, but no one knew it, haha.
And one could smoke his sigaret without being a criminal

And, most of all: everyone believed in the future.
Very funny to see how they tought the year 2000 would be.
It's not like that at all... Some things are (cars etc, but not flying)

I think artists are very sensitive for the 'vibes' around the world.
Today, we have many many problems to solve, worldwide.
Today's 'vibes' are negative, and you hear this in today's music.

Negativism kills creativity!

spot on.

unfortunately the 60s sort of backfire on us u know since we went through that fundamental total joyride. music and fun n optimism died with the 60s. now its almost like it never happened. too fantastic to be true? "The Dream Is Over" (early 70s)

Bah... The seventies!

Everything was so.. ugly
The cars... Never seen made more ugly cars then those from the 70s..
The buildings... Entire city areas with beautiful old buildings where destructed and replaced with horrible 'plastic' buildings. Nothing beats a 100 years old building, if you ask me..(you get the Phantom for free, hehe)

But, thank God, some groups still made fine music, then.

...say, could it be Jones would be a much better choice as singer today for digital re-recordings of Eric Burdon's greatest hits than Burdon himself (which he sadly does from time to time)? :? And while we're at it, I'd say he should've sung Burdon's contemporary songs since about the 80s...

I saw a remarkable interview with Tom Jones years ago. They asked him if he had any regrets about his career or if there was something that he would have done differently. He said that he would have preferred to be a blues musician. You could hear the camera crew laugh in the background and he knew no one was taking him seriously. He asked someone to go get his acoustic guitar and then he asked them to give him a topic at random. On the spot, he extemporaneously made up a blues song on that topic and, I gotta say, he was freakin' great. Not just pretty good but great. As good as any blues guitarist/performer I've ever heard. He already had that terrific voice but who knew he could play guitar so damned good?!! I was genuinely impressed. The crew was stunned and the interviewer asked why he didn't pursue blues. With typical Tom Jones humor, he said he was too good looking to do blues. :lol:

Tom Jones is great, was there any doubt about that or is it only me n videofred who liveth in the 60s

anywhays, there was many, many that was extremely good artists both singing + instruments shuffeling. for some or another reason - allthough i cant really believe it - it seems that the vast majority of the artists we heard of had some really heavy musical background - or was it only the tide of the time?. anyhways they are still more professional these days and sang wonderfully compared to nowadays plastic artists.

even sony n cher really put out some incredible stuff - all different from the rest - in line with the trend of the time - creating something really new - and at least cher is a bladdy good artist still. whatta grandma.

I saw The Magic Band (sans Beefheart of course) play in Bristol last year, they were SO good! And they clearly really enjoyed playing, (having presumably long ago recovered from the insane cult-like circumstances in which they originally learned the material!!

Really superb show. They played for ages, were really enthusiastic, insanely technically good, Drumbo does a really quite impressive Beefheart impersonation for the tracks with vocals, and they came out to sign stuff + chat afterwards and were really friendly.

Somewhat amusingly, the audience, aside from my friends and I and one other small group of probably in a band 20-somethings, consisted almost soley of middle aged dads!

I'll take Beefheart over the 'Beatle bones 'n' smokin' Stones' any day! ^_^

Also I'd just like to generally express a vague kneejerk denial of the nostagia and sentiment that modern music is inferior etc on this thread

Tho certainly most/all manstream pop is pretty atrocious at the moment!!!

Old old old Stones may still 'rock' in some capacity I'm sure, but I think the definition of rocking has changed...

For me their OAPerformances are in a whole different plane of existance to recent amazing gigs I've attended by Lightning Bolt, Melt Banana, Fantomas, etcccc!
