SuperDuper8/Max8 for Beaulieu?

Post by audadvnc »

Has anyone asked Bjorn or any authorized Beaulieu repair shop to perform a gate modification on a 4008? Would they even consider it? That 20% extra frame is tempting...

Would you consider doing it yourself? It's only two screws and some filing. There has been some doubt about the success of the mod with Beaulieus; looking thru the gate you can see a piece of metal that looks like it would block the gained area, but this is true of other cameras on which the mod works.

The great thing is that if you do it right, (don't remove too much material - use a strip of film to guage), even if it doesn't work, you can still shoot Super 8 no problem, and you haven't spent a dime...and you've done the mod so you're ready to do it on a Nizo etc.

[edit] I should add that it's not necessarily added frame area you're after; this area will still be outside TV safe for the most part. It's more that you don't have to blow it up so much to *make* it TV safe.

Stating for the record again we [Sleep Always] did not invent the widened gate thing, though it says we did in certain articles. As they say at the short track, we'll take a win any way we can get it...#;?b

I never knew *what* the exact percentage is/was, and not all cameras have the same amount of masking anyway. I agree - any increase in image quality is a good thing, especially one gained so easily.

Saw a Canon in a pawn shop a couple years ago. It had a *humourously* large front element...and a 200' magazine. Anybody know what I saw? Anyway, the larger the diameter of front element, the less vignetting, because blah blah blah...

Vignetting in the telecine is not an issue when xferring SuperDuper/Max 8.
