Lit Up looks like it was really shot off the wall! Probably some super 8 in both videos. The VanderSlice video has a lot of different formats, including stills...

But look at this screengrab. I think they went into post and blew out even more of the face. Notice that the reflection isn't blown out, and that it almost looks like some sort of mask was applied. Looks pretty cool in the video.

My guess is that no post production trickery was involved, the actor merely had a light bulb in his face. The effect might be even neater if the camera was inverted and the reflection was right side up.

Does anyone know what camera he's holding in the On Set Photos for the John Vanderslice video? I can't tell.

EDIT:

I found it after some serious squinting at the pictures and comparing to stuff on ebay. For anyone else who wants to know its a Fed-4, a russian copy of the Leica.
