Pass the cart... anyone fancy a go. K40 30 seconds for free

Post by mojohey »

However, if you just want someone anonymous to get some footage of the city, I'd do it for you. Just send me the carts with instructions on what kind of material you want. And I can shoot it with some reasonably nice cameras--Nikon R10? Canon 814XL-S? Nizo 801M?--your choice.
This is a quote from another thread from Etimh... gave me an idea.
I'm happy to send out 3xKodachrome 40 (or more) carts to the forum, so members can take part in a film your city; town; car; wife; dog whatever and then send it on to another member. After the cart is fully exposed... whoever is last can send it back to me and i'll ship it to Switzerland.

This might work or its just another Red Wine crap idea... but the rules are... (feel free to make suggestions)

1. Ident your shot with name, city/town/title whatever. 3 seconds MAX.

2. Each person has 20 seconds of Kodachrome 40 time to express their love. Lets keep it at 18fps, but timelapse is more than welcome. (should get 9 persons per cart. it'll be tight)

3. If i receive enough PM's re' this idea i will list the shooting (cinematographer) order and this list will be sent with the numbered cart and remain with it at all times.

4. This could be the deciding point for people to take part or not... someone will have to have the addresses of the members taking part. I'll put this up for debate... is it best to add the names and addresses of the members to the Shot list that will be sent with the cart... or is it best everyone sends me their address and i then only email the person with the cart the next persons address? phew!

5. Lastly, although this is my idea (i don't know if its been done or mentioned here before... excluding Timelapse Day '03 '04) it has to be the responsibility of the cart holder at the time to contact me with its progress over the world and that person will have to pay for the postage to the next person

6. These are not really rules but suggestions to the idea. I have lots of film in the fridge so if more than 18 or so members want to do it... i'll send another cart out...

7. Suppose this is me trying to make up for registering for timelapse day '04 and not sending my cart in... sorry Andreas i only let myself down.

I'm really serious about this idea and if only 9 members do it,then only one film... if 36 folk, then 4 films... it'll still be fun. Fun i said. Then at the end of it all i'll keep the finished films :D but will get a transfer done and post the results on line (maybe DVD's could be made available)

I am no way trying to compete with Timlapse Day or any other future ideas our Administrator has for us... this is more an interactive, hands on fun Super8 experiment. So please give me your thoughts and PM me if you want to recieve the film and will then send it on to someone else... as soon as i have 9 people on board... i will send out the first film.

This is my remembrance to Kodachrome... lets see the best K40 colours or colors  that the WORLD has... i know there are members at every corner of the globe.

Come on forum lets unite... lets do it for fun. (or tell me its the wine talking) :P

Thanks. Morris.

I'm in. I'll PM you with all of my contact information.

Question: Any problems with mailing the cart all over the world? Would it be adversely affected by x-ray security checks, etc.? Everyone involved should look into their respective country's security measures regarding mail parcels.

I love projects like this so please count me in. I'm planning on moving further south soon so let me know when you need my address.

The Pulse of Life project grew out of a discussion online just like this one. A check of the archives will reveal the two members who originally started discussing it.

Each cart should only reach 9 individual people. It could be a cart a country to minimise any X-ray problems... just a thought.

Welcome to the List Etimh.

Uh, what?

Wait, can you explain what you want to do again? Shoot 20 seconds of a 2 1/2 minute cart then pass it on? Sounds like you'll be wasting about a quarter of a cart in camera changes.

How about 1 member, 1 cart? Then please re-explain your idea? Thanks

Uh, in regards to this very issue, some good information from John and others going on in this other thread:

Oops, that's right, huh? Might not be that economical. :(

Then again, the one cart/one person idea loses the whole "pass it along" aesthetic of mojohey's original idea. 8O

That would basically be everyone just shooting a cart and sending it to someone for "compilation." Not much fun in that.

I guess I would do it. Idaho has plenty of Scenic stuff that people like.

Perhaps I could even hop down to Jackson Hole Wyoming, Park City Utah, Moab Utah (Arches National Park), or Yellowstone National Park in Montana (All of those are less then a few hours away from where I live).

I’ll officially sign up once we get all the bugs worked out.

The cart change is a pain... my original thought was people could end with a fade and rewind the someone else could pick up the disolve in another part of the world... but i soon remembered about the carts being remove
Anyway i thought you only lost about 6 frames during a change... so 8 changes in a cart 48ish frames..
I know this isn't an exact science but its not going to be quarter a cart.

The advice i need is, if people shoot 20 seconds of film i thought if everyone shot at 18fps then there would be 3'20'' on a cart.

Maybe i went on too long on the first post... but you must get the idea.

As for a Cart each... thats going into Timlapse Day familiar territory... i was thinking something simpler and different, maybe a K40 send off round the world trip... :? unless Andreas has a plan for another project.

and look what became of that. one good but not great film that hasn't reached audiences anywhere, and one dead end. i maintain my position (see mentioned thread) that you need more to keep it interesting. if you want somebody to donate that much time as well as expect people to screen and watch it, playful tech fascination won't cut it. plenty of artists and directors here. let's do something cool?

maybe you should write some simple script, so every participant will shoot one scene of film on provided cart. main character will have to wear included moustache :)

I tend to agree with Mattias... come up with a crappy framing story about extraterrestrial visitors who are shooting a documentary of various Earth locations, or something... something to give it some momentum. There's a sequence in "Fiasco" by Lem where the human spaceship crew witnesses a 'film' transmitted by aliens, consisting of scenes of life on their planet. The visual language supposedly carries across species... why not make a filmic Voyager record to shoot into the stars or bury in the earth? ;)

I agree... but i would be worried that "let's do something cool?" = ££$$

If its going to involve lots of people and little of their time... it has to be simple. Unless we give the shoot a theme??... wildlife... nature... city... street... people??? i don't know, thinking out loud.
