So what?

Thousands and thousands of films get submitted to the Cannes short film section every year. Doubtless there were hundreds of brilliant films rejected, some probably much better acted, scripted and captured than this British entry.

Who knows why they pick the films? Most of the shorts they show were shot on 35mm, so this is hardly a film vs digital narrative.

Most of the time I think the selection is almost entirely arbitrary for these short film festivals; just depends on the tastes and eccentricities of the jury that year. Ive known plenty of intern pre-judges who sift the films before they go to an experienced jury. Most of them wouldn't know a Kubrick from a Tarkovsky, and would probably think the Motorcycles is a provocative 'foreign' production!

I thought Solaris was the Russian answer to 2001 in its contemplativeness and slowness?

Same. I agree that they are generally not qualified in the sense that you'd expect.

"I thought Solaris was the Russian answer to 2001 in its contemplativeness and slowness?"

A response, maybe. Solaris is anti-2001 in its emphasis on nostalgia and humanity; Tarkovsky hated Kubrick's de-emphasis on humans in the film. FWIW, I find Solaris to be much more engaging than 2001.

Are you bitter over your own film getting overlooked? I wasn't pointing it out for any other reason despite the fact that this is an 8mm website (up to last year it was 8mmfilmshooting.com) and an 8mm film had made it into freakin' CANNES!

How often does that happen?

P.S. - And what does any of this have to do with film vs. digital?

Anyway, there have been several other threads on this fairly old news

Good to know. In the back of my head, that's all I was wondering myself. :D
