New S8 Film online

Post by tfunch24 »

Earlier today I uploaded a short 2 minute S8 film, "Power Outage," that I shot over the course of two nights in April completely by myself. It was shot on a Leicina Super at 18 fps using Ektachrome 7240 film and transferred to VHS by Roger Evans via the DV-8. Basically, it's just an excuse for me to familiarize myself with some new lighting equipment I purchased.

It's pretty amateurish; I overestimated E7240's ability to shoot in existing light--which becomes painfully obvious during the shots of all the lights going out--and some of the edits are jarring--I was attempting to cut on action.

Because I'm using a horse-and-buggy 56K modem, I compressed it using Microsoft video (25% loss in quality) at a resolution of 160 * 140 at 12 fps. No music. The file is 8 megs.

Here's the file (watch for URL wrapping):

Enjoy and feel free to comment.

hard to judge. way too lacking in quality, so i didn't even bother to look for a story, even though the images looked very promising.

suggestion: if avi is your choice of format, use indeo or divx. both will give you "vhs quality" at the bitrate you're using now, and they both work on macs as well. chosing the best compression is *especially* important with a 56k modem...

Thanks for the advice, Mattias!

As for the film, it doesn't have much of a plot--like I wrote before, it's mostly an excuse for me to familiarize myself with some lighting equipment I had purchased. In the film, a circuit overloads and the power goes out. I go downstairs to the basement and reset the circuit. That's the plot!

Anyway, I took your advice and recompressed the film at 320 *240 using Indeo 5.10. This time there was only a 15% drop in quality and the film looks much better. Again, no sound. It's 3.1 megs in size and you can watch it here.

Enjoy and feel free to comment. As I wrote before, it's pretty amateurish but then again I am an amateur.

Enjoy!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention--if the Shooting 8mm server can now stay where it is, I can upload a much higher quality clip to the Shooting 8mm server.
