Christmas Gift Idea No.1

These things are actually pretty good! They just use a 30 second loop of super 8 film and it's easy peasy to take apart and replace the film with your own.

I can't remember all the details now, but there was this guy who got 100 of them and put in his own films and had a 'screening' at the Rotterdam Film Festival (I think), where each member of the audience had a viewer and looked through it at a white screen and then passed it on to the next person until everyone had seen all 100 films.

Yes. It's easy, the small clear plastic cassette just pops out and has a small screw to hold the 2 sides together, it seems pretty much the same principle as a super 8 cartdridge.

So what happens as soon as the loop is running? Does it project, or do you have to look inside?

So, I could take a roll of K40, shoot some family scenes, transfer the film to digital for NLE, and then cut up the original film and install the footage in a movie player or two and mail them to relatives (that you could trust would not through the toy away). I like that! Thanks for the link. Wonder how long the load accepts in feet? 50? 25?

I also have the Fisher Price movie player/projector that the kids crank and watch...

I may have to sacrifice Snow White for some of their own footage...its Super 8 as well.

The player also comes in a hand held model on auctions from time to time. The carts are yellow and long and rectangular.

I remember when I was a toddler, I had a pretty similar thing, also hand-cranked, it only was more like a real projector, it didn't have an in-built screen so you needed to find a spot to project on. Used to do so on the bathroom wall because with lights out and door closed, it was the darkest place in the house. I remember enjoying the concept of making things move faster and slower by cranking appropriately, and to see that seemingly fluid motion is made up of single frames when cranking really slow.

It does both...you flip a switch and it shoots the film out the side.

ooh, cool to have a new source of these.... I've collected one or two with the notion of putting my own film in.... conversely you can of course take the film out and project it! I bought like 20 of the cartridges for these for 5p each ages ago but couldn't find a viewer! :)
