Will Kodak give me the student discount?

Post by film_idaho »

I go to an Idaho public high school with a student ID. Will Kodak give me the student price :-s ? I really want to get every discount I can for my future 16mm short film. :)

Thanks,

I'd suppose so, just call them about the proper procedure.

I feel certain they will. They'll want you to send/fax them a copy of your student ID, which they will (in theory) keep on file. Give them the nice, sappy "I'm 15 and look forward to being a purchaser of Kodak film products for life." :)

The discount shouldn't be just for 16mm and up, either. They'll give you a break on Super8 stuff too...

Don't most of know a student who is in high school and could buy the stuff for us? I do. Is that legal?

How much is the discount?

The discount is 20%. Theoretically they do keep your ID on file but for some reason I have to fax it each time.

I am just worried because I don't go to a college, nor am I taking a film course. Well worth a try, lets just hope the person I talk to has a heart.

Whoo Hooo! 20%!

You don't have to be in college or a filmmaking class. The first time I ordered from Kodak, the representative wanted a special form from the film department proving that it was for a school project  If they say that, call back 15 minutes later and get a new representative on the line.

I'm not in Sweden ;) The poster who asked is in the US. I wish our discount was 50%, although your price is probably significantly higher to start with (not to mention VAT and your income tax).

there's no official student discount in sweden afaik. you'll get whatever discount you ask for, or you don't. prices in sweden are about the same as the rest of the world by the way, including film stock. perhaps you're thinking of norway? vat is a bummer though at 25%. not that i care since i'm running a business and thus don't have to pay that. ;-)

/matt

ps. income tax in sweden is 30%, plus your employer has to pay 30% of the gross amount for the mandatory healthcare insurance and such.

Other sources for discount

If you can't get a student rate, you might want to look for a local film co-op or arts group to join -- they may have a discount. I know mine does - LIFT (Liason of Independent Filmmakers Toronto). I think Kodak just increased the discount for LIFT members to 20%. I'm sure other groups get similar deals.

Sorry I don't have any US co-ops, but for Canada, look on the "Links" page to get a list of local film groups:

Generally, you need to be a student in an accredited filmmaking program at the university level:

Your Kodak sales representative may make an exception if you are persuing filmmaking as your primary career, and not as a hobby.
