dirt spots from lens or conversion filter

Post by tbruegg »

I have some strange dirt-spots on my films i've filmed this summer with a Beaulieu 4008 with a Angenieux 8-64.
Does anyone know where this could come from? lens or conversion filter?

Thanks

Thomas

There on the right it looks like hairs stuck in the projector/telecining device.

There are several other possible locations for the dust: mirror, film gate, inside the lens, ... .
If you can't see the dust through the viewer, it's most likely located on the mirror or between mirror and film gate... .

Besides: There are some rumors about dust on films developed by Dwaynes and Kahl...

Ahhhhhhh the dreaded dust spots on a 4008...I had them too.

They are not on the mirror--If they were they wouldn't be on the film. Do they get worse as you stop down??

My guess is that they are on those shitty filters that are built in. If I were you I would send it in for a cleaning and have those damn filters pulled faster than an infected wisdom tooth.

Good Luck

i thought they where obvious, heres the pic again with crankt contrast. yes on the right there is some dust from the camera gate this is not the problem, it's not a transfer problem.

If that is the only camera you own, then I would guess it is as Nigel says. However, it is all too easy for a teeny speck to get on one of the many lenses on the telecine process and hence a spot stays in one spot while your film moves...also, take a toothpick to the edge of your gate from time to time...those hairs are most likely from the camera.

Lastly, no chance of those spots being on the c-mount lens...marks that small would be MUCH bigger if they were on the lens elements...

Concerning the removal of the internal filters from a 4008, I heard that the distance of those filters was critical for achieving optimum quality. So simply replacing them with an external screw on filter may not be the best thing, according to people like Bjorn.

thanks for the replies. I think that brings it all down, it's the filters. Fortunately its not the only camera i own. Usually i shoot with a canon 1014 xls.

hello everyone,
..I have the same issue with the dust spots on my beaulieus 4008 footage.
They get worse with increasing Fstop number (when the aperture´s closed to maximum I can see them through viewfinder). If its on the filters I would not see it. Basicaly I thing its in the lens. I think I can see dust on the middle element of the lens when I look through it.
My question is: Is it difficult for an experienced camera mechanik to open it up and clean the dust from the angenieux lens?
I really want to go through it becouse I know the camera produces much better results than my Nizos 801...

i just checked with my mine. i cant see them through the viewfinder f-stop open or down. i guess we have a different problem. infact i did some tests this afternoon, with different lenses and 2 4008's Filter in and out, lets see what the results are when the film is processed.

It is the filters...Get them pulled and then smile with knowing that you own one of the best cameras made.
