The very best I ever had: Angenieux 1:1,2/6-80mm.
Super sharp and extremly high contrast, that eases focus setting.
Perfect performance also in extreme settings (open stop, 6 mm, 80 mm).
Significantly sharper and crisper than the Schneider 1:1,4/6-70mm. The footage looks one more step closer to 16 mm footage.
The good performance at open stop is what is required for the 50 ASA Super 8 stock. We often shoot with open stop at available light, receiving soft images because of improper lenses.

I mostly own Bauer cameras and they have excellent lenses.

1) Bauer S207XL with Bauer Macro-Neovaron 1,2/7-45 (fixed lens)
Very good sharpness but the lens' focal range is a bit short.

2) Bauer S709XL with Bauer Macro-Neovaron 1,2/6,51 (fixed lens)
Excellent lens. The 6mm is way wider than the S207's 7mm.
Still, 51mm as the longest focal length, is still a bit short.

3) Bauer S715XL with Angénieux Zoom-Macro 1,4/6-90 (fixed lens)
Now that's a zoom! The 90mm is just wonderful.
Sharpness is excellent but, IMHO, gives the same results as with the lens on the S709XL.

4) Beaulieu 4008 ZM II with removeable Schneider-Kreuznach Optivaron 1,8/6-66
Now this is what I call SHARPNESS! It is almost too much
I only regret it doesn't go beyond 66mm as the longest focal and doesn't open more than 1,8. Still the iris ring system is much more convenient that on any other Super8 camera.
There is also a Kinoptic 12,5 mm (fixed focal) with that camera but I haven't tested it yet.

Hey Yemi,
I'm the guy that bought your Bolex DS8 gear. I agree on the quality of the lenses. they're really nice, but I'm really dissapointed in the regisration of image with the camera. Did you not have this problem? K-25 seems a little better than Fomapan(not sure why) but do you know what can be done or who actually converted this cam? Any suggestions?
As for other lenses,
Angenieux 6-90 was the best I ever had on my Beaulieu 6008 however that cam was stolen in the Burbank CA area last month. If anyone sees this cam with a soft cam bag and a Nizo ultrawide III I'd appreciate your help in it's recovery.
I think this lens had nicer contrast over my Nizo 7-80, but shoting negative put them on par after rank.

Elmo super 110 - 7-70 f1.8-f22, damned sharp, especially between f4 and f5.6...macro will focus down to the dust on the lens!

Canon 514XL...not quite as good as the Elmo but very nice.

Eumig mini 3 - not very sharp but you can work with it especially at distances of around 10 feet (3m). Fixed focus 3x zoom.

Chinon 1200SM 6-72 f1.2-f22, sharpest movie camera lens I have ever used, f***ing fantastic, detailed pictures with accurate colours, tones, everything. Good macro.

Braun Nizo Integral 7 - a little disappointing, reasonable detail but not up to the standard of my Elmo or Chinon.

Bell & Howell 1230XL - f1.2 3x zoom lens, not particularly sharp, no macro facility whatsoever, colours come out well though.

8th Man,

The DS8 gave me rock solid images so I'm not sure what the problem may be. Try adjusting the pressure plate. If I recall, theres a way of increasing the pressure on the gate.

Hi Matt,

I looked two old magazins of the year 1978 (Tekniikan Maailma (TM) ? The World of Technics, Finnish magasin, this year in it's 50th annual). It has always been full of all kinds of tests and comparisons, between 8 mm cine cameras too. Here are some characterizings considering camera lenses.

Atte

PS. These are sound cameras you see...

Tekniikan Maailma 7/1978:

Chinon 100 SXL Direct Sound: slightly soft picture - slight barrel distortion - slightly shivering

Sankyo Sound XL-25 S: slightly soft - slight barrel distortion - firm picture

Fujica Single-8 Sound AXM100: slightly soft - slight barrel distortion - firm picture

Porst Sound F40: good - no distortion - slightly shivering

Yashica Sound 20 XL: slightly soft - slight barrel distortion - slightly shivering

Fujica Single-8 Sound ZXM300: slightly soft - slight barrel distortion - firm picture

Copal Sound 400XL: good - no distortion - firm picture

Sankyo Sound XL-400S: good - no distortion - firm picture (best camera in this test group, when observing all properties, not only picture quality)

Canon Canosound 312 XL-S: good - no distortion - firm picture

Chinon 40 SM XL Direct Sound: good - slight barrel distortion - shivering (recommended camera with reservations)

Eumig Sound 31 XL: good - slight barrel distortion - shivering

Bell & Howell 1235: good - slight barrel distortion - shivering

********

Tekniikan Maailma 13/1978

Fujica Single-8 Sound ZXM 500: soft picture - slight barrel distortion - firm picture

Porst Sound M8: average - slight barrel distortion - fairly stable

Canon Canosound 514 XL-S: excellent - slight barrel distortion - firm picture, (recommended camera)

Sankyo Sound XL-600S: average - slight barrel distortion - fairly stable

Bell & Howell 1238: good - slight barrel distortion - tolerably stable

Chinon Pacific 60 SMR / Direct Sound: average - no barrel distortion - fairly stable picture, (recommended camera)

Eumig Makro Sound 65 XL: excellent - slight barrel distortion - fairly firm, (recommended camera)

Yashica Sound 50 XL macro: excellent - slight barrel distortion - fairly firm picture

Bolex 551 XL Sound Macro-Zoom Aspheron: average - no barrel distortion - fairly firm picture

Chinon Pacific 12 SMR - Direct Sound: soft - no barrel distortion - fairly firm picture

Elmo Super 8 Sound 612 S-XL: good - slight barrel distortion - firm picture, (recommended camera)

Bolex 5122 Sound macro-zoom: good - no barrel distortion - firm picture

* What are the lens on ( when interchangeable or converter ) ?
* & Could you class them from the best to the baddest & why ( sharpness, contrats, color rending ) ?
...
Remember that the more I get answer, the most objective the final qualification will be.
Thanks,

Would be helpful or even crucial to mention the method of the particular comparison. Id also like to know how to perform a simple lens image comparison that suits the "average S8 nerd" .

The best for me :
1.) Nikon R 10 1,4/7-70 , sharpness from edge to edge without using the pressure plate , best sharpness at low light and at full shot
2.)Bauer A 512 and Nizo prof.
3.)Nizo 6080 and integral

You might get a very beautiful image in terms of color quality and resolution parameters, acording to my experience on s8 format with Zeiss optics.
Are you using a 16mm Cal Zeiss prime lens ?
