Lens qual. contest : owner of several S8 cam please post
In order to complete my end-school thesis called "Super8 little guide to professional filmmaker" ( around 100pages online here this summer ), I need to do a lens quality classification of S8 cameras. You may have already noticed that two different cameras from the same model might not give the same results ( sometimes very differents ) so I cannot find those, do test, & pretend this is objectif. So I thougt about asking each of us to compare there cameras when owning several cameras. So my questions are :
* What cameras do you own?
* What are the lens on ( when interchangeable or converter ) ?
* & Could you class them from the best to the baddest & why ( sharpness, contrats, color rending ) ?
Feel free to put any cameras in it.
If two lens you own have already been compared by another(s) poster(s) & you thoughts are the same than him (them), please notice it.
Remember that the more I get answer, the most objective the final qualification will be.
Thanks,
Matt

Best zooms
=======
1. Schneider 6-66mm (Beaulieu 4008)
Fantastic contrast and sharpness for such a big zoom.
2. Schneider 6-70mm (Beaulieu 6008)
A *very* close second but it is faster than the 6-66mm.
3. Canon zoom lenses
I've used a Canon DS8 and an 814 Electronic. Nice bright crisp lenses
4. Eumig Nautica
This really took me by suprise. A surfer friend of mine shot a bunch of footage and I was amazed at how good it looked (both in and out of the water).
Best Primes
========
1. Switar primes on a Bolex Rex4 DS8
Razor sharp. Too bad the Bolex Rex4 reflex viewfinder is so dim. Probably
best to get the lenses collimated so you can put more trust in the lens distance markings.
2. 6mm prime lens on a Beaulieu
I shot a roll of plus-x and I couldn't believe how crisp it looked. To be fair, most decent primes should acheive similar results. Less glass is always a good thing....even better on a Beaulieu since there is no prism.
I have a few c-mount lenses designed primarily for cctv. They are fast modern lenses with modest zoom ratios (6:1). My pressure plate arrived in the mail yesterday so now I'll shoot a couple of test rolls with the lenses mounted on my Beaulieu.

lens quality
Hello,
Voigtlander Moviflex MS8 camara with Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens ( f 1.9 9/36mm) gave me much better result than Schneider zoom fitted on a Beaulieu 4008.
Better result because Carl Zeiss lens gave me better color purety (less cross-color and color aberration), highier resolution, and in definitive a more pristine image than what Schneider zoom /Beaulieu camara combination gave me in the test.
Note : I do not remember which Schneider zoom was used, but it was in excellent condition and collimated for the 4008 camara.
Note 2: Test was basically shooting same content (gray-color chart), with same light condition, at same position camara, with same emultion (surveillance) and then checked quality in rank-cintel telecine.
Regards,
Daniel H.

Matt,
The 6mm prime mounted on the Beaulieu was a Computar. This is why I think the c-mount is perfect for super8: A ton of decent affordable lenses available at suitable focal lengths. Most of the time I'm not interested in telephoto primes, I want something useful in close-up situations. Don't knock cctv lenses until you've tried them. The important thing is to make sure that there is NO protrusion beyond the lens mount and that the lens is a true c-mount (17.56mm flange back focal distance) and not a cs-mount. Check the lens specs! Most cctv c-mount lenses provide 1/2inch diagonal coverage upwards (will cover the super8 frame easily).
Oh yeah, I also want to add the Angenieux f1.9 8-64mm to my list. It's very compact and should appeal to anamorphic shooters. I really couldn't tell the difference in resolution between the Switars and the 6mm prime on the Beaulieu. The Bolex DS8 made a difference because the images were more stable. I was DS8 crazy a while ago but sold my gear. I didn't shed any tears because I only had 2 filmstocks to choose from and I couldn't stand the Bolex reflex viewfinder (I even had the ground glass brightened and it still looked like the iris was stopped right down even at f1.8). By the way, an unmodified Switar 5.5mm H8RX lens will vignette on a DS8 camera. I had to pick up a modified one from JK camera which only just covered the super8 frame. I think it's best to have ample coverage since there is typically some resolution drop-off around the edge of the coverage area. The Switar 9-36mm H8RX is very sweet lens too but this will vignette on DS8 below 12mm or so.

Yes, too bad they could not be adjust on my beaulieu ( cause of prism collimation incompatibility ), I'd love to make me a cheap set of S8 primes.
Anyway, I saw many readers on both sticky threads but not many posters ! Please write my friends, would be cool to get 150 answers like on andreas polls : would allow use to set our needs for buying.

There's so many variables when filming, that I'm unsure what pictures are good because of good lenses and what are due to good conditions. It's confusing anyway.
I have always had the best results with my old Canon 518SV Auto zoom and my 1014XLs. Canon lenses really are excellent it seems. They seem to glow a little - warm facial colours, perhaps due to coatings. I like this!
My Nizos are great also, but i haven't owned my 6080 throughout a long summer of shooting though. Initial results suggest it's very crisp and balanced - shouldn't the lens quality be as good as on a c mount really - it is a Schneider Kreusnach 7-80 after all?

Matt:
As I mentioned earlier please pay close attention to the cctv lens specs!!
If the lens protrudes beyond the mount threads you will damage the Beaulieu shutter!!
Lucas:
Do you really rate the Schneider 6-70mm on the Nizo's? I've owned an S-800, 801 Macro and a Professional. The contrast was not that great...certainly not as bright and snappy as the Canon lenses.
I'd actually like to try a smaller lens on the Nizo like the 481 macro.

My present and previous cameras:
The lens sharpness:
1. Canon 1014 XL-S and Bauer S 709 XL, these ones have the sharpest lenses I have in my super 8 cameras, excellent. I still own them.
2. Bauer S 715 XL and Leicina Super RT, very good, I still own them.
3. Bauer Royal 10 E Makro and Eumig 880 PMA, good, I still own them.
4. Revue TM8. In my experience it isn't as sharp as Eumig 880 PMA, even it's the same camera, good. I have sold it
5. Agfa Movexoom 10, not so good, but you can work with it, I have sold that one.
6. Sankyo ES-44XL, not so good, but you can work with it, I have sold that one.
7. Lomo Aurora 219, point and shoot fixed focus camera, hasn't the real lens, only tranparent plastic part doing this job. I broke it
